get these now!

Seriously, you must do yourself a favor and go get Mika and the new Kaiser Chiefs‘, CD, Your’s Truly, Angry Mob!!! Both of these new CDs are only $8 at Best Buy!! Go pick them up!! You will not be sorry, both are fantastic. I love this continued British invasion! Let’s keep it up, by showing our support!!

Also, I just listened to the new Joss Stone, and it is HOT. More great Brit music. YES! Also, it comes out next week, so you will have to wait until then to get it; but it must be said that the new Hilary Duff is off the hook. There is a clear influence from Kylie on this one, and Hilary has really taken the “bubble gum” sap out of her music. It is a very good listen, and what I am always looking for… great pop!!

There are a few other things I am checking out right now (most of them came from seeing them at my visit to the Times Square Virgin Megastore *drool*):
New LCD Soundsystem
Muse
The first Kaiser Chiefs album, Employment (“I predict a riot!”)
The Bird and the Bee (from an initial listen, I believe I may be in love –> A little bit Imogen Heap, a little bit Jem)
Elliot Yamin (he covered my favorite Carpenter’s song… I had to at least check it out) side note: I can’t believe I just linked myspace. Barf.
Young Love (haven’t heard much yet… vote’s still out)
and the new Tracey Thorn (from EBTG) record, which is slowly growing on me (I was hoping for love at first listen). I think that she put too many sound effects in there, but I am slowly warming up to them.
I also snagged the live Portishead album, and eh. I don’t really like live stuff, but I have been in a Portishead mood lately, so I will give it a shot.

What’s everyone else spinning right now? I love finding new good music!! Also, I will gush even more about the albums that I am still completely and utterly in love with: the new CDs by Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, Kaiser Chiefs, Kellie Pickler, and Dashboard Confessional. They are all FANTASTIC, and have been getting HEAVY rotation. Good music is like gold, but for my ears!

Hope everyone is having a great Wednesday, and I am working on getting my NYC photos on flickr (the uploader is being douche), and so I will post about my trip later. Just know, I had a great time!!! And I am jazzed about my new music choices! YAY! Now, share the love, alright!?

Also, be sure to get Children of Men… it’s on DVD, and it is great. Love that movie!

when is a stone more that just a stone?

When it’s a diamond.

Last night, we watched Blood Diamond for the first time and it was shocking. After doing research about conflict diamonds when the movie came out in the theaters, I was excited to see this movie, and I have to say, that I was literally horrified when I saw the things I have read about conflict diamonds portrayed so realistically in the film. What makes the portrayal even more shocking, is that there are people in Africa are actually being killed, maimed, enslaved, and tortured all because of a little clear rock.

But why? Well, the De Beers diamond cartel has created a perception of rarity by controlling and manipulating the world’s supply of diamonds. The prospect of wealth from obtaining and selling these stones drives people to kill and maim (like the hand-less boy pictured here). These stones provide money to rebel organizations that go around doing this merciless killing, and all we have learned about diamonds, is to focus on the 5 C’s. That’s just awful. We’ve been duped, and people are paying for it with their lives.

It’s interesting that this continues, because diamonds are not precious or rare; they are actually found in abundance throughout Africa. But because of the control of those like the De Beers cartel, the value of an otherwise worthless stone fuels greed and destruction. It is a fact, that most of the diamonds that are mined and discovered go into vaults, so as to keep the supply of diamonds on the market very low. This makes the demand for diamonds high. High demand means they are worth more; and with that, owning a diamond has become a symbol of wealth.

The sad fact, is that these stones are used to pay for guns and ammo, which are used in rebel wars. In these wars, people chop off other people’s hands, kidnap their children and brainwash them, turning them into killing machines, and kill anyone that gets in their way. They enslave people to mine the diamonds for them, producing more and more wealth to fuel their wars. But why are these conflict diamonds being bought? Isn’t there a way to stop this? Well, thankfully, the UN and most of the African countries that have diamond supplies have made efforts to require authentication in order to sell diamonds. Unfortunately, the reality is that the conflict diamonds are smuggled out of the region, and their origin is faked in order to obtain “proper documentation”, thus “proving” that the diamonds are not conflict diamonds. Conflict diamonds are supposed to be illegal, but they are still bought and sold every day.

Until there are no more conflict diamonds, many, many people will suffer and die. All for a stone. All for that coveted engagement ring. I never thought about it before, but now, I can’t help but wonder how many people actually died or were maimed every time I see a sparkle from someones diamond ring. Sure, they are pretty, but they are virtually worthless without the supply and demand that De Beers has created. Africa has been producing tons of diamonds over the years, and the cartels control them, so this problem goes on. I for one will be steering clear of diamonds, because I can’t bear to stomach the thought that a diamond that I bought cost someone their hands or their life. Something to think about, isn’t it?

Here is some more information to check out, if you want to learn more. The whole thing just makes me sick, really, that an insignificant stone can be so deadly. A guess a diamond really is forever… but so is death.

Also, sorry if you think the image is graphic, but it struck me, thought it was appropriate. It isn’t mine, it comes from the internets.

300, daylight savings time, flickr musings, and one BRIEF word about AI

First of all, 300 opens today, and I want to start by saying that I have been waiting for this movie since I heard it was even being made. Needless to say (not to say how it happened, or when I have seen it… tee hee hee), I was completely blown away. The visuals are visceral and intense. The bodies of the men and women in this movie go beyond toned, and into the realm of sculpture. The acting is top notch, and the cinematography is at a minimum breath taking. This movie truly is an orgy for the eyes. The fighting and the special effects used in this movie put much of the other stuff I have seen to shame. I also find it completely fascinating that this is loosely based on a real battle, the Battle of Thermopylae, where king Leonidas, king of Sparta stood to protect his people. These men held an amazing level of courage and insane sense of loyalty, if you ask me, and it is eloquently portrayed in this film. As someone who loved Sin City, knowing that this was based on (as well as worked on by him as well) Frank Miller’s graphic novels of the same title, I was not only excited to see this, I was extremely pleased that the movie delivered, and I loved what I saw. Frank Miller is a force to be reckoned with, and if this is the type of thing we can expect from his projects in the future, I commit to have my eyes and ears peeled to whatever move he makes next. 300 is everything I hoped it could be, and more. The actors are beautiful (seriously, Gerard Butler is hot, but in 300? I mean, goddamn. And you lesbians… Uh, Lena Headey? WOW! She also wins the award for women’s lib in this movie). The fighting is epic. The special effects are unreal. The movie, is a beautiful triumph. Full 6 out of 6 stars (, folks; this one is NOT to be missed. You MUST see this in the theaters for yourself. This is what movies should be like. Wow.

Daylight savings time (DST)… seriously… Why do we do that anymore? I know, I know, gain an hour of daylight in the evening, shift it in the morning later in the year; but based on the headache that it is causing a lot of people this year, I ask, what is the point? There has been a criticism of the importance of this practice since its inception, and I just wonder if this criticism deserves more investigation. I for one don’t think that it serves much of a purpose, because it is really only one hour. Eventually, the day grows longer or shorter, regardless if time jumps forward or backward that one hour. So why worry about it?

Also, I wanted to put the word out, that I created a flickr group called Holy Cow!!!, and hope that you will join me. Now, I usually don’t get that excited about flickr groups and whatnot, but I am excited about this, because I came up with idea, basically, because of the lack of such a group. I think that it is cool to have a flickr group where we can put photos that we find astonishing, and even post those of our own that make us go “holy cow!” when we see them! Isn’t that fun? If you aren’t a member of the group, now’s your chance, go here and join up! I want to see how many people and how many awesome photos we can get involved.

Finally, and I promise this will be brief; HOW IN THE FUCK did Sanjaya Malakar make it into the top 12??!?!?!? I am serious people, I am not trying to be mean to the kid, but he can’t hold a candle to anyone on the show. If you don’t care about American Idol, please disregard this vent, and go on with your day. Thank you.

Well, that’s about it for me. Have a good weekend everyone! I am going to see 300 again tomorrow! You should too!

zodiac and a new lens

So last night, we went with Barry and Rebekah to check out the newest Jake Gyllenhaal flick, Zodiac. For those of you that know me, know that I love all things Gyllenhaal (Maggie included!), so there was no way I was going to be able to wait for this movie to make its way to DVD. So, I braved the Friday night movie crowds (those of you that know me well, know that I HATE going to the movies on opening night… crowds make me angry), and we managed to have no problem sitting together, thanks to Daniel and Andrew meeting us at the movie, and saving us four chairs. Score!! So just before the movie, when we were eating dinner, Barry mentions that the movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes long… uh, I wasn’t expecting that, but nevertheless, I was excited to see a new Gyllenhaal movie. So we made our way into the theater, settled in, and watched Zodiac. While it definitely was a long movie (seriously, almost 3 hours long, remember!), it was actually really good. There was lots of “thriller” moments, and there was actually a bunch of surprisingly vivid violence in the recreation of the Zodiac’s killings. It really captured the hysteria of the time, being that a mass murderer was just out there killing people, and no one knew who he was or where to look for him. Surprisingly, there was actually quite a bit of humor in the movie, which cut the suspense very nicely. Most of that came from Robert Downey Jr., which was nice and welcome in this serious movie. It was also cool how they followed the reporters and the police as they worked to try and uncover who the killer was before he killed again. Eventually, the police give up, and Jake’s character takes it upon himself to find out who Zodiac is years later, while writing a book about him. Overall, I really liked the movie, and I will definitely get it for our collection when it hits DVD. The only thing that I didn’t really like (even though it was totally necessary), was the continual splicing together of scenes labeled with how much later they were than the previous scene (i.e., 2 months later…). They did that A LOT in the film, and it was a little distracting, but overall, I really liked it. I’ll give it a five out of six (); perhaps another viewing will make that go up, because I get distracted in the theater sometimes, and all that time jumping plus the almost 3 hour movie proved to be a little distracting. Either way, that’s what I thought, now you go see it! [picture from iheartjakemedia.com]

drinks anyone?Other than that, I am completely reeling over my newest purchase; I got a new (very inexpensive) lens for my camera. The lens is a 50mm f1.8, which is awesome, because it has a wicked aperture, allowing me to do awesome DOF things. I am in love with it. I messed around a little yesterday, and got some pretty great pictures. I look forward to learning more and more about it, and hopefully, I will just get better with time. To the right is one of the pictures that I took yesterday (if you want to see it bigger, click on it, and it will take you to the flickr page). What do you think? (you can see the rest on my flickr page) I am impressed with how well this camera handles, and the impressive pictures that come out of it. YAY great purchase!

I hope that everyone is having a great weekend, and relaxing accordingly. We are going to have a rousing Wii Boxing game this afternoon as our workout, and then hang out with friends tonight and tomorrow night. God, weekends are the best. I wish they lasted longer!!!

post-Oscar post

So last night was the gay Olympics… I mean, the Oscars… and I spent the evening at a lovely Oscar party, hosted by my good friend John. There was a lot of booze, a lot of fun, and a lot of anxiety, as John had us participating in a Oscar pool for a coveted Target gift card. I actually fared quite well, as I ended up predicting 13 winners correctly (INCLUDING MY BABY JHUD!!!), which placed me in a 4 way tie with Barry, Rebekah, and Lisa. The shitty thing is, that John had decided that in the event of a tie, the winners would square off in Wii boxing… which happens to be the game I am the WORST at in Wii sports. I fought a good fight, making it through the first round and narrowly beating Rebekah, but I was crushed by the mighty Barry, as he claimed victory (and the gift card) in the end. I wasn’t sore about the loss, though, but for some reason, my jaw is really hurting today, and my voice is almost gone. I tend to get a little too excited sometimes (especially when my buddy booze is there), and apparently, I let it all loose during the boxing matches. I think it is hilarious that my jaw hurts, though, because I wasn’t even hit, it was VIRTUAL boxing! WTF is up with that? Anyway… Here’s a wrap up of the actual awards for the night, with a focus on my correct predictions (13 baby!): (The ones with the (*) beside them are the ones I correctly predicted, leading to my almost victory in the competition, for the night.)

  • (*)Actor in a leading Role: Forest Whitaker — Didn’t see this movie, but I correctly predicted he would win based solely on the hype he garnered for this movie. If you play a real person, and play them really well, you have a good chance of winning. Too bad hottie Mchothot Ryan Gosling didn’t win. At least he was nominated, though.
  • (*)Actress in a leading Role: Helen Mirren — no brainer. Seriously… She was a total shoe-in.
  • Supporting Actor: Alan Arkin — Holy cow! While I did pick Eddie Murphy, because I was sure he would win (See!!! I told you Norbit crushed his chances of winning!), I was really happy to see someone win for Little Miss Sunshine… MY favorite movie of 2006.
  • (*)Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson — OMFG LOL ORLY YES YES YES??!?11!!?!? I am SOOOO happy my baby Jhud walked out with the win on this one. How awesome is it that for your first movie role EVER, you snag both the Golden Globe, AND the Oscar. Work it girl!!! Her performance with Beyonce was awesome as well, with Beyonce COMPLETELY surprising me… But that is a different story.
  • (*)Animated Feature: Happy Feet — Haven’t seen it, but I somehow knew it would win over the rednecky Cars. Penguins are cuter than cars, ya’ll.
  • (*)Art Direction: Pan’s Labyrinth — I have been gushing about this movie since I saw it. It is amazing, and beautiful. Totally deserved this one.
  • Cinematography: Pan’s Labyrinth — Kinda surprised it wasn’t Children of Men (my guess), but I do love Pan’s. Glad it won.
  • (*)Costume Design: Marie Antoinette — I was really shocked that more people at the party didn’t choose this one… when I was watching this movie, I kept saying to myself, “wow, these costumes are beautiful and amazing”… and when I saw that it was a nominee, it was a definite pick for me. The Devil Wears Prada didn’t stand a chance!
  • (*)Directing: Martin Scorsese, The Departed — It was his time. Everyone said so. I believed them.
  • (*)Documentary: An Inconvenient Truth — Hell fuck yes. This movie blew me away, and it was something everyone should see. It totally deserved to win.
  • (*)Documentary Short Subject: The Blood of Yingzhou District — Um, I just picked this one, because I hadn’t heard of any of them. As I said last night, if it is about oppression or disease (meaning it has Blood in the title), then it will probably win. However, that doesn’t apply to movies with the word Diamond, also in the title.
  • Film Editing: The Departed — I guessed Children of Men for the same reason I picked them for Cinematography. It deserved it… I mean, COM looked REAL!
  • Foreign Language Film: The Lives of Others — *audible gasp*… uh, where’s Pan’s Labyrinth?? Seriously?!?!
  • Makeup: Pan’s Labyrinth — I went with Apocalypto… did you see the make up on those people? Okay… THAT’s why. MOST of the people in Pan’s were just normal people.
  • (*)Music: Babel — I haven’t seen it, I just randomly picked this one. Lucky me, eh?
  • Original Song: I Need To Wake Up (Melissa Etheridge) — While I picked Listen from Dreamgirls, because why nominate 3 if you aren’t going to at least pick one of them (!??!?!), I am super happy Melissa won… this song is great, and it has a great message.
  • (*)Best Picture: The Departed — I thought this was a no-brainer, but apparently, a lot of people thought Babel would get it. I didn’t see Babel, so I wasn’t dissuaded by it… The Departed was pretty good, ya’ll. Good enough to be best picture! HA!
  • Animated Short: The Danish Poet — I went with No Time for Nuts, because everyone loves that little squirrel from Ice Age. Well, at least I thought they did.
  • Live Action Short: West Bank Story — I picked Eramos Pocos, because I originally didn’t choose one, and had to come up with one on the spot. If I would have known what WBS was about, I would have picked it. Damn!
  • Sound Editing: Letters From Iwo Jima — I went with Apocalypto… the other film in another language. Oh well.
  • (*)Sound Mixing: Dreamgirls — Well, they have to throw them at least a few bones, don’t they? YES!
  • Visual Effects: Pirates of the Caribbean — I was kind of surprised, because I picked Superman… I guess I was the only one impressed by it. I was told by people in the room that the CGI in Superman was obvious, and not so much in Pirates. Oh well…
  • Adapted Screenplay: The Departed — I should have picked that, but I went with Borat, because of the love he was shown at the Golden Globes. Silly me.
  • (*)Original Screenplay: Little Miss Sunshine — Seriously, if it can win best picture, it at least has to be recognized for the brilliant story. YAY!

So there you have it… that is how I guessed, and I am glad that I did end up coming in first with a four way tie. It is just too bad that I wasn’t able to defeat Barry at boxing… but no hard feelings, Rebekah said that she took the gift card. HA! Hope everyone had a great Oscar night, and a BIG thanks for John for throwing a great party. Can’t wait until next year!!!!

because I said so

No, this isn’t your mother talking, what this is, is my opinion of the new Mandy Moore/Diane Keaton movie, Because I Said So. I wrote a list of movies that I wanted to see yesterday, and this one was at the top, because I had already made plans to see it. And I am very glad I did! This movie was seriously cute, and a total romantic comedy, which I usually, and in this case definitely, love.

In the movie, Mandy Moore plays the youngest of three daughters, Milly, who were raised by their single mother, Daphne, played by Diane Keaton. When the Milly has another failure in a series failed relationships, her meddling mother decides to step in and “help her have one succesful relationship” before she dies (Milly that is). What Daphne proceeds to do, is place a personal ad on the internet, with the basic jist of the ad being, “mother seeking life parter for daughter”. When Daphne goes to meet all of these potentially eligible men, she basically has to go through a bunch of freaks, before finding one she apprehensively likes for her daughter; only he isn’t there to talk with her about meeting her daughter, he is a musician at the resturant. Just as she is getting to know him a bit, in steps “Mr. Perfect”, who is everything she wants for her daughter, leading her to forget about the musician; only what she doesn’t know, is that the musician grabs one of Milly’s cards, and decides to check her out for himself.

What happens, is a meddling mother pushes the “perfect” guy on her daughter, while she finds someone else who genuinely fits her (the musician); causing her to juggle both, and confusing her as to what she really wants. The result is a good romantic comedy that has just enough laughs to balance out the hurt that inevitably comes with situations like this. In the end, I really liked this movie, mostly because Mandy Moore is completely adorable, and so utterly fantastic in this role. She is a beautiful girl, and it is pretty hard to believe that she would have a hard time finding any one to be with. Also, a HUGE bonus for this film, is that the musician is played by Gabriel Macht, who is fucking hot hot hot!!!! I didn’t even know who he was before this movie, but I am definitely paying attention now. He plays such a genuine and sincerely romantic guy, that it just makes me melt thinking about it. The only part of the movie that I really didn’t care for, strangely, was Diane Keaton; at times, her acting was just painful to watch. Luckily, Mandy Moore’s greatness, and Gabriel Macht’s (who’s pictured here) hotness, balanced it out enough for me to forget about it, and enjoy the movie. If you are a fan of romantic comedies, then this one is a must see. I give it 5 out of 6 stars (), because it is definitely a film that I enjoyed throughout, and it is definitely one I will be owning on DVD. It won’t be winning any awards, but that shouldn’t be the benchmark of “good” films anyway! If you are looking for a feel good rom-com, then you should definitely be checking this one out; but if you need another reason, do it because I said so!!! (sorry, I just couldn’t resist!)

[as always, the pictures aren’t mine]

the upcoming movies I want to see post

I mentioned on Wednesday that there were a lot of movies coming out in the next month or so, and that I should probably make a list; so I am. After seeing some good movies recently, I realize that while I don’t really like to go to the theater (who needs it when you have a 42″ TV and a soft couch at home?), there is some stuff I feel like I have to see, without waiting for DVD; although, I am sure that I won’t see ALL of them in the theater… Here’s my list so far (listed in the order in which they are coming out):

  • Because I Said So: I will probably go see this tomorrow with John and the boys. It looks cute, and it has Mandy Moore. She is awesome, and that is pretty much any reason to see a movie she is in.
  • Ghost Rider: Now, I HATE Nicholas Cage with a passion, but I LOVE comic book movies. I will probably give in and see this one. I just hope it doesn’t suck monkey nuts; because it definitely has the potential to. And it isn’t a good sign that they aren’t letting reviewers see it before release… that never is, really.
  • Zodiac: Jake Gyllenhaal movies are always worthy of a trip to the theater. Seriously.
  • 300: Holy fucking shit I am so excited about this movie. I talked with Deb about seeing this at IMAX, because based on the MANY previews I have watched, this movie is going to be stunning. I predict it will make my best of 2007 movies list.
  • Premonition: I saw the trailer, and it looks like it could pretty cool. I really like Sandra Bullock too, so perhaps she will make this one worth seeing. I find the whole idea of someone dying, and you waking up the next day and it didn’t happen yet, as a pretty creepy idea.
  • Blades of Glory: I am going to seriously have to see some trailers for this; because it looks really promising, but also looks like it could pull an Anchorman (which wasn’t that funny). At least Ben Stiller isn’t in it (even though he is one of the producers), because that would make it a definite NO.
  • Grindhouse: Holy nerd’s wet dream, Batman: Tarantino AND Miller in one film?!? Well, it’s actually two films, but I am still totally excited. Rose McGowan’s character has a gun for a leg. Fuck yes.
  • Hot Fuzz: Simon Pegg and Nick Frost?!?!? AGAIN??? These two did Shaun of the Dead, one of my favorite movies. I will see anything they do. This one is a top of the list type movie.
  • Spiderman 3: Duh. No need to explain this one at all; I still can’t believe Venom is in it. Wet dream anyone?
  • Shrek the Third: The second one was better than the first one… will the third be better than the second? We shall see.
  • Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer: OMG. I was terribly excited when they announced this, and have been following it ever since. I really liked the first one, even though many didn’t, and can’t wait to see Silver Surfer in action!
  • Transformers: Alright… I’ll bite, but I am not going to be running to the theaters. I liked them when I was a kid, but not that much. I would love to see a Thundercats live action movie. That would be awesome.
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Duh again. Harry Potter movies are always must see movies.

Wow, that is a pretty short list. I was thinking that there were more movies that I was excited about… what am I missing? What are you excited about seeing? I am probably just drawing a blank on something, so let me know what I am missing, kids!!!

Also, totally unrelated, but I am FINALLY getting my camera; my tax refund was much more than I was expecting, and I am getting a digital SLR!!!! I have wanted one forever, and now I am getting it (just the body, though, because my GREAT FRIEND Deb is giving me a lens!!!)! Woohoo! In case you were wondering, it is the Canon Digital Rebel XT; but I am getting the 8MP version, because it is about $200 cheaper than the 10, and I don’t think there will be THAT much difference, you know? Still, I’m excited!!! Hope everyone’s Friday is rock awesome!

pan’s labyrinth: my review

It started with a move to a base camp; her mother pregnant with her new husband’s (the Commander) baby. Ofelia is forced into a place where she doesn’t feel comfortable, but something mysterious awaits her… her fate. Near the base camp, there is an old labyrinth, which Ofelia discovers soon after her arrival. Little does she know, she is in for more than an adventure when she meets the labyrinth’s inhabitant, a mystical faun. The faun tells her of her past, and of her destiny, and tells her that she must listen to him and complete several tasks he requires of her, and she agrees to help; all while dealing with a violent Commander as her new father, and watching over her mother during her pregnancy.

What you have just read is a brief synopsis of the beginning of Guillermo del Toro’s brilliant movie, Pan’s Labyrinth. The movie, billed as a fairy tale, is grim, dark, violent, and horrifying at times. You sit in your seat captivated by what you see on the screen, and feel yourself clench the armrests because of your worry about the characters you are watching on the screen; especially little Ofelia. She is probably one of the bravest little girls ever born, because she manages to hold her composure up against things that would terrify me to the point of a breakdown; and she does it over and over again. I won’t go into too much detail about the movie, but what I will say, is that my friend Lori was exactly right, it is “like a very dark, more grown up version of The Neverending Story”. Remember the story of young Bastian exploring the Land of Fantasia by reading about a hero named Atreyu in his story book, only to find out what he has read is real? This movie follows a similar formula, but without the book, and with a more personal experience by the main character, Ofelia. While it is definitely not child friendly, as there is a lot of violence, as well as some pretty explicit and gruesome scenes, this fairy tale is one that really gives its all to the viewer, and leaves you wondering just what happened for real when it is over. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, both for its visual journey, as well as for the harrowing story of a young girl caught in the middle of a post war occupation, seeking to fulfill her destiny; which she learns about by meeting an unlikely friend in a creepy faun.

This movie was definitely one that I was excited about seeing, and I am very glad that I went; I will definitely want to get this on DVD to see again. The little girl who plays Ofelia is awesome, and the costumes for the faun and the thing that has the eyes in its palms are simply amazing. The story is great, sad, and scary at times, and will captivate your attention, and make you care about the people. It captures that element of prisoners being subjected to imprisonment by an evil dictator, and how they cope with their situation. Powerful. With that being said, I am enthusiastically giving this movie the full 6 out of 6 stars (). The only other thing about this movie I want to say is… GO SEE IT! You will be glad you did. I lied, I do have one other thing to mention, because I know that some people will be pissed if they didn’t know this, and went to see it and hated subtitles… yes, it is subtitled, the whole movie is in Spanish. But that doesn’t change how I feel about it at all… so it shouldn’t stop you either!!

some reviews for you to peruse

A gloomy cold day calls for some music, movies, and a video game review! Let’s get started!

Katharine McPhee’s self titled album came out this week, and based off of two songs I had heard already, I was definitely curious to hear this one. I know a lot of people are fans of American Idol, and I know just as many are against the whole show “creating” music, but if there is one thing it can do, is find a great singer. Now, what happens to that singer varies… they can get good material and go with it, or they can fizzle and go nowhere. And it’s clear that it can be hit or miss, as the winner Taylor’s CD isn’t doing to well, as it is steadily falling (almost) off the charts, but fellow contestant Daughtry’s CD is in the top 10. So where does that leave us with the runner up from last year? Well, over all, her CD isn’t what I was expecting from her. Sure, there’s a fair number of ballads and whatnot, stuff that you would expect from am American Idol, but she really branched out with her interpretation of pop. There are several danceable tracks, and even some more edgy/hip-hop sounding stuff; much of it using the current Nelly Furtado/Fergie formula, but making it better, well, at least better than anything Fergie did. While I don’t think the CD is flawless, as there are a few songs I could just do without, it is definitely well produced, and quite enjoyable. If you liked her on the show, and you like pop, I recommend the CD, because she has a great voice, and they even picked a few surprises for her to sing; as well as a few good surprises. Stand outs for me include: Over It, Love Story, Open Toes, Each Other, and Ordinary World (which sounds a lot like it should have been/could have been a Delta Goodrem song). I would say that this is probably akin to a JoJo or Christina Aguilera type of pop, with some Delta Goodrem gems thrown in, so if that is your bag, pick this up! i’m glad I did! I would give it somewhere between four and five stars, but since I don’t do half marks, I will just give it the benefit of the doubt and round it up to a 5 ; because the good ones are really good, which in this case, makes up for the not so good ones.

Now, the next CD I want to talk about is pure sugary syrup poured into the shape of a CD, and hardened. I am talking about the debut disc from the Lebanese Brit known simply as MIKA. Basically, I heard a lot of buzz about MIKA’s upcoming album (released sometime in Feb) from the uber-pop blogs, and that much attention certainly made me sit up and take notice. And boy I am glad I did. Let me put it this way, MIKA is equivalent to taking the Scissor Sisters, The Jackson Five, and Elton John, mixing them together, while having Freddie Mercury sing the vocals. The result is super catchy sort of kitschy songs that are definitely feel good, and hearken a sound used by groups in the feel good pop business, like the Monkees. This is dance-rock-pop that is just as happy-go-lucky sappy as it gets. He definitely has a sound that isn’t too mainstream here in the states, but my guess, is that he will do quite well everywhere else. There are a few tracks that are more down to earth, and slightly more “serious” but the feeling of the CD stays pretty consistent throughout; this is a great pop album. If you are in a bad mood, I would put this one in and you would definitely be smiling in no time. Stand outs for me include: Grace Kelly (probably one of the catchiest songs EVER), Lollipop, Love Today (which sounds like a Scissor Sisters track, which, many of them do), Relax Take It Easy, Billy Brown (gay content! which makes me wonder about MIKA), Big Girls (You Are Beautiful) (which is definitely the “follow-up” to Fat Bottom Girls by Queen, if there ever was one), and Any Other World. Overall, this is just a fun CD to listen to, and I definitely recommend it. Too bad it’s an import… Oh well. I enjoyed this so much, and do every time I listen to it, that this one definitely deserves the full six out of six stars !!! This is one that I will definitely keep listening to, over and over.

Today’s movie review is for the new Jennifer Garner movie, Catch and Release. She hasn’t been in anything lately, and when I heard she was in this, I had to run out and see it. You see, she is my favorite actress, after all. Now, I didn’t read much about the movie, and I am honestly glad I didn’t. It has gotten rotten reviews, and most of the focus has been on the strange vehicle for this romantic comedy. It starts with a funeral, and it is pretty dark for the first part of the film, and then quickly, it shifts gears to become the romantic comedy it was destined to be. While there are a ton of surprises in this film, the story is pretty sincere, and goes places that not many “feel good, chick flicks” tend to go. They really explore what would happen if you lost a lover, and found out some not-so-sweet things about them after their death. It also looks at who you can count on, and who you should watch out for. Overall, I really liked the film, and I think I will have to see it again to truly appreciate it; mainly due to the surprises I vaguely mentioned. There was a lot of laugh out loud humor in the movie, and I thought that Jennifer Garner really carried the movie (not to say the others in the movie weren’t great). The only problem comes from how quickly people seemed to move on, or change, but considering that it was a 2 hour glimpse into the fictitious lives of characters, it is forgivable. Suspend a little bit of your belief about how relationships “should” work, and you should be okay. Only because of the quirks I asked you to suspend when watching it yourself, I give this 4 out of 6 stars ; it was still a pretty good movie.

Today’s last review focuses on our most recent video game purchase for the Wii. After our friend John brought over his copy of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, I was convinced that we needed it for our own collection of games. Not because of the main game, of course, which is actually quite stupid; but for the mini games. This one boasts 50 different mini games, ranging from bowling, to darts, to ring toss, and so on. You can fly a bird, you can drive hover carts, and you can even slingshot monkey balls at balloons. Some of the games are pretty stupid and simplistic, but many of the ones I mentioned have been played over and over at my house. This is definitely a title to have when people are coming over… just make sure you have enough Wii-motes AND nun-chucks… some of the games require both; and some of those games are quite fun! Overall, I would give this game a 5 out of 6 stars . The only reason it doesn’t get all six, is because the main game is pretty much shit.

Whew! That was a lot to get out! Hope everyone stays warm today… even though, it really isn’t that cold. I hope to start reviewing more stuff for my blog, because I really enjoy doing it. I am also going to work on the CD and DVD review pages… stay tuned for that too!

two review tuesday

So this weekend, I experienced two media phenomena that were too new and fresh not to review here on my blog. The result? You get a two review Tuesday! Woo hoo!

The first review today, is for the movie Children of Men. The premise of the movie, is a post apocalyptic future, in which Britain is the only country still standing; but not without consequence. In this future, all of the illegal and non-British citizens are being caged and hoarded in refugee camps, while life for everyone else is rough, mainly because of global fear of the end of humanity; as there haven’t been any new births worldwide for over 18 years. That fear and panic over the end of humanity leads to violence and chaos, including an increase of a government military presence, as well as the uprising of radical activist groups.

In the beginning of the movie, you start with the knowledge that baby Diego, the youngest person on the planet, has just been killed for refusing to sign an autograph. Saddened by his loss, the entire society is mourning, which leads to more violent outbursts by both activists and the government alike. Dealing with the harsh reality that he exists within this miserable and bleak world, Theo (Clive Owen), a former activist, continually struggles to get by in this daily routine, when he is contacted by his wife (Julianne Moore), who needs his assistance with her activist group. Her group needs his help getting a special person to something called the Human Project, a supposed safe haven for someone that is special like this woman. You quickly discover the reason this woman is special, it is because she is pregnant. They believe she may hold the key to saving humanity, and as a result, she is potentially the most important person in the world; and must be protected at all costs. The rest of the film is a wild roller coaster ride following Owen and the girl as they try to make their way out to sea, in order to meet a representative for the Human Project; who may or may not actually exist.

Let me start by saying that I was really not prepared for this movie. Mainly, because I wasn’t aware that many movies could be made in such a fashion that would have you so engaged that you would actually feel like you were watching a documentary instead of a fictional thriller. As you follow Owen on his protective mission, you see the most dire and horrid living conditions and witness actions by radicals and the government alike that make you thankful our society has not gotten as bad as this film shows us it could. The movie is violent, ultra-real, gripping, and very scary; mainly because what is portrayed is something that could potentially be our future if bad choices and violence escalate. It is a movie that should not be missed. This movie is like V for Vendetta, only with a much more volatile and violent society, and of course, the fear that comes with a lack of procreation fueling much of the violence. I highly recommend this movie, and as such, give it 5 our of 6 stars (). The only reason it doesn’t deserve the last star, is because I was a bit deflated by the ending; which I will not even hint about here. Go see it, you’ll be glad you did!! And the cinematography is crazy. Just crazy.

Now, the next peice of media I will review is a game for the Wii, specifically, Warioware Smooth Moves. While I admit I was probably a bit more excited about this game than I should have been (mainly because there haven’t been too many titles coming out lately that piqued my interest… or many at all for that matter), I was not so enthusiastic as to run out and buy it; although, I probably would have if Best Buy would have had it in stock on Friday (it was a moment of weakness combined with a balance on a gift card). Well, after renting the game on Sunday with some friends, I have to say that I am glad that I did NOT buy the game. While the game is definitely a lot of fun, the word randomness doesn’t even begin to describe the game play. There are highlights, like when they explain how to hold the Wii-mote for a mini-game (which is hilarious each and every time), but there are also low points, most of the games are over before you even figure out what you are doing. I didn’t have much time to go through all of the nuances of the game, so there may be parts of the game that I would enjoy, but simply do not know about. But, with that being said, the parts that we did get through proved that it was a very easy game to play, in fact, so easy, that we beat it a few hours after we rented it. Sure, it unlocked a few more gems, but overall, it was just more of the same. While it was fun to play with friends for a few hours, I definitely think I would lose interest in this game if I bought it, but it would definitely be fun to play a friend’s house, every now and then. Or, it would be fun just to rent it if I were bored, and friends were coming over. Overall, I would give it a 4 out of 6 stars (). Fun, random, but perhaps a little too random, and definitely not a game for those that are annoyed with rapid changes and ADHD fueled entertainment. Seriously, this one is all over the place. Also, and I know that this isn’t so much of a “good” or “bad” thing, but the game is definitely geared more towards children; but that doesn’t really take anything away from it.
