if music is a victim then so am I…

You know, there are very few things in life I absolutely love (James, beer, breathing, and so on), but one thing is for sure, music is more than a loving relationship for me; it is a passion. Often times people ask those silly questions like, “would you rather cut off your arm or your leg” or “would you rather be blind or deaf”; and honestly, at least for the last one, the answer is an astounding, “I don’t know”. And that answer, is all based on my insatiable hunger for music.

The reason that I was thinking about this, is partly because of the wave of responses Madonna’s new record is getting from gay bloggers everywhere. I am not going to talk about that AT ALL, so if you want to read about what I think of Madonna’s record, I wrote an entry. Check it out here. The other thing that got me thinking about this, is actually a good thing; I was recently asked to write for a kickass website that reviews movies, music, concerts, and other cool shit like that. I am extremely honored that he even returned my email, let alone invited me to write for the site; but I must say that I go forward with some trepidation. While I do review movies and music for my own site (ahem, you can check that out in the links in the right column), this is the first time I will write something for someone else’s site, and frankly, I am a little nervous; and probably not for the reasons that you may be thinking right now.

First of all, I am not concerned about my abilities to write. In fact, whether anyone thinks so or not, I consider myself to be an at least decent writer, mainly because I try my best to be as grammatically correct as possible; while maintaining interesting and flowing passages in what I write. I try to make it good, so it usually is, well, pretty good. The main reason that I am a little worried, is because I don’t know if I am “cool” enough. Hear me out. This is mostly because I tend to only tickle the edge of the indie music scene, and rarely, if ever, find myself gushing about someone that exists within it. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are several artists that I completely adore (Death Cab for Cutie, Sara Bareilles, Sufjan Stevens, LCD Soundsystem’s “Tribulations”, Esthero, etc.), that most people have never heard of, which I feel totally qualifies me to gush about them appropriately on a site like this. But, in exploring this other site, I am worried that my reviews of something like the new Lindsay Lohan record, or perhaps my review of the movie version of Rent, would not really fit in. So in lies my feelings that I am uncool. I am probably and most undoubtedly being a weirdo, and I probably do, in fact, actually rock; but, there is always that little glimmer of doubt, you know? I think that everyone feels that at some point, whenever they put themselves out there, and believe me, I am not going to let it stop me; I will just suppress it like I do all my other emotions (just kidding!). I just hope that what I have to bring to the table, is something that is at least well received; and doesn’t give everyone gas or something like that.

(Oh, and Preston, I was thinking of writing my first movie thing about Rent, what do you think of that?!?)

Music is my radar:
Scissor Sisters – Music Is the Victim
Britney – Me Against the Music (see what I mean?)
Sufjan Stevens – Chicago
