Finally! I read yesterday (but was in a meeting all day, so I couldn’t post about it), about how Sony has finally decided to release Fiona Apple’s record, Extraordinary Machine! AND, two songs, O’ Sailor and Parting Gift will be available for download from iTunes as of today (August 16th). Hallelujah!
Now, this doesn’t mean that I am not mad at Sony anymore, in fact, if they mess with her CD like they did Natasha Bedingfield’s, I will be just as pissed as I was here. So don’t do that Sony; you have been warned!

Also, I read this press release from Sony, which makes it seem like there was no gap in time, and that all has gone according to plan:
Acclaimed artist Fiona Apple has completed her highly anticipated third album Extraordinary Machine and it will be released by Epic Records on October 4, 2005.
It is really interesting that they have taken this stance, considering that we all know that it has been delayed for at least a year. I know, because I scoured the internet to find out what had happened to Fiona, and ended up reading lots about it, getting frustrated, and finally, I ended up with a copy a while ago; but don’t worry, I will still pick it up on October 4th (Hear that Sony, I will buy the record, even though I downloaded it! I bet that makes your head explode!). So here’s a big FINALLY from me, for Sony, and a congrats to Fiona… because maybe, just maybe they actually heard the lyrics you wrote in Please, Please, Please (from the upcoming record); and you have made a difference. Who needs a “radio playable” single… we love you Fiona! Can’t wait till October 4th.
I saw Fiona play at Lilith Fair in ‘97… damn good show. I can’t remember if it was there or somewhere else where she was wearing a shirt that said, “I Hate _________” (with a place to fill in the blank), and in the blank she had written, “A lot.” Heh.
Amber, I am officially uber-jealous. Seriously. When I was at ECU, Fiona was coming, and I got up at the butt crack of dawn, and was the second person to buy tickets. Two days before the show, she canceled it because her grandfather died. Needless to say, I was sad for more than just her grandfather.
And I love that shirt. I need that. But I need to have it where I can erase it and put different things on it… cause I hate a lot of shit at different times, with varying intensities.
When does the CD come out? Man, they sat on that one for a long time. How hard would it have been to just release the thing?
Chas, the CD comes out October 4th. As for the reason they wouldn’t release it, it was highly speculated that “they couldn’t find a viable single”. Check out these lyrics to Please Please Please; which is on the aforementioned record:
This would hint that she has met some opposition to trying new things with her sound, and for not simply reproducing and sticking to her trademark, “Criminal”. I for one, believe that is what happened, they wanted something she was unwilling to give, simply because she is an artist, and for that, I really respect her. At least she gets to vent on the record!
Okay, I want that T-Shirt, and in my blank I would write Avril Lavigne. I can say that, I’m Canadian, we’re collectively embarrased. Let’s not even talk about Celine Dion.
toot toot
But yes, even in the frozen north we thaw long enough to RUN to record stores when people like Fiona Apple finally have their CD’s released!
I don’t know what it is about Avril Lavigne, but I can’t stand her either. NAH! I just think that she is a punk. NAH!
And I agree, let’s not go there with Celine. Lots of issues.
