5SF: may 13

Look y’all! The 5SF is back this week! Now that I’m DONE WITH NURSING SCHOOL, perhaps it will become more of a regular feature here on this blog; I have missed doing it, and I know that it has been too sparse over the past year or so. Without further adieu, let’s get this thing started!

City and Colour – Northern Wind
In anticipation for Dallas Green’s new City and Colour album, Little Hell (out June 7), I have been checking his website a lot to see if any news or songs were being released prior to the album. Imagine my intense glee when I found that he had posted Northern Wind, because this song is nothing short of epic. This song solidified the fact that this guy is not only incredibly talented, but that he only continues to raise the bar on his own music. I have talked a lot of Dallas in the past, and I will not be stopping any time soon; and if the new album is anything like this, I can guarantee we have one of 2011’s best right here. This song is already on repeat for me, and I pre-ordered the album right after I heard it; something I never do. This guy has really made a lifelong fan out of me, and I will continue to follow his music as long as he makes stuff as endearingly beautiful as this. Northern Wind is seriously one of my favorite songs of 2011 so far, and makes it even more exciting to have City and Colour as one of my most favorite artists. Listen to Northern Wind here.

The Decemberists – Rise To Me
A friend of mine on facebook reminded me that I needed to give the new Decemberists album, The King is Dead a proper listen, and I am glad that I did. Overall, the album is pretty decent, but this song is the real standout for me; it is incredibly beautiful in every way. I have always loved Colin Meloy’s voice, and it is so tender in this song, and the lyrics are vivid. I love how the song is arranged, and how it is almost like an old timey country song; which is normally not something I would instantly love. It’s definitely a little different than some of their previous work, but I cannot get enough of this song; it is really, really beautiful. I have been listening to it on repeat for a few weeks now, and it just gets better every time I hear it. Listen to Rise To Me here.

Slow Runner – Devil Moon
I mentioned Slow Runner a few posts ago when I was talking about the incredible William Fitzsimmons concert I saw at Smith’s Olde Bar a few weeks ago. These guys opened for him, and played with him throughout his set as well, and I was very impressed and thought they were pretty amazing live. When I came home, I downloaded some of their stuff, and was happy to have found a great band in the process. In concert they reminded me a lot of The Postal Service, and that electronic-pop-folk sensibility is front and center on their recorded stuff as well. This song, from their new album Damage Points, is by far my favorite of all their stuff I have heard. It’s beautiful, and the lead’s voice is very shyly tender and sweet. I will definitely be keeping my eye on these guys in the future. Listen to Devil Moon here.

Kylie – Better Than Today
It has been exactly one week since I saw the incredible show Kylie put on at the Fox Theater last week. My buddy Stu surprised me with tickets, and the show was amazing!!! I was a fan of Kylie before, but she has definitely moved up on my list of favorite artists. The show’s production was far and above over the top, and every moment was a true sight to behold; this woman is incredible live, and you are truly missing out if you haven’t seen her in concert. Since seeing the show, I have been listening to lots more Kylie, and have given Aphrodite more of a chance. After having seen her perform the songs live, I have a newfound appreciate for them, and have been enjoying her music much, much more. I feel like if I had seen her live earlier, I would have probably ranked this album higher, and it may have even made me favorites of 2010. Thanks for taking me to the show, Stu! It was incredible!! Watch the video for Better Than Today here.

Jennifer Lopez – (What Is) Love?
After seeing a friend I follow on twitter say he was actually, surprisingly enjoying the new JLo album, my curiosity was piqued, and as such, I decided I needed to give it a listen; after all, JLo has had some great songs in the past. While the guilty pleasure still remains strong with On the Floor (which is way more catchy than I originally gave it credit for), the stand out to me was this song. When looking for the song so that you could hear it, I found a lot of people comparing it to a Nelly Furtado song called All Good Things, and I can definitely hear the similarities; although JLo’s song is much more polished and cleaner to the ears. Overall, this is a fun pop song, and makes me glad that I at least gave JLo’s new album a spin. Listen to (What Is) Love? here.

I was kind of all over the place this week; but what did you think of my picks? Let me know what you are listening to as well, won’t you?

5SF: july 9

The summer of nursing school is still going strong, but luckily, there are only one test and two finals remaining. We are in the home stretch, people!! This is my “friday off” (ha!), and I have a little downtime, and I wanted to bring you some fresh music since I tend to leave you for long periods of time without it these days. So, let’s get right down to it, shall we?

Note: I kind of don’t feel like bothering with the album art this week… sorry kids; I am drained from so much school work!

The Saturdays – Missing You
After I posted about this new Saturdays song in Facebook, a few people commented that they weren’t feeling it, but the more I listen to it, the more I LOVE it. Seriously, The Saturdays are one of those groups that seem to only get better with each new release, and after their last album Wordshaker made such a huge splash with me, I just can’t wait for their upcoming album, which is apparently, due out later this year. These girls have to be the hardest working girls in girl-group driven pop right now!! Three albums in three years; and at least two of them have been fantastic! If the album follows the usual pattern of delicious, well-produced pop, I know that it will be a fantastic album; and here’s hoping it’s anywhere near as good as Wordshaker, because that album was good enough to make my top 5 last year!

Sky Ferreira – One
While I wasn’t really a fan of her first single 17, I heard this song earlier in the week, and I am in LOVE with it. Usually, repetition in a song is a huge turn off for me, but the synth-driven beat, and the super poppy rhythm have me totally hooked on this ‘one’. Apparently, it was produced by the BRILLIANT Bloodshy & Avant (as was 17; eh, can’t win ’em all…); which honestly speaks volumes as to why I love it so. This is the type of song that should shine a huge spotlight on this girl’s career, and I sincerely hope it’s a signal of great things to come from her in the near future. You should check out the video if for no other reason than to see just how much she bears an uncanny resemblance to the Olsen twins… doesn’t she?!

Kylie – Get Outta My Way
So we all know that Kylie’s new album Aphrodite is out, and well, it’s pretty darn good (which was kind of expected). That being said, I don’t think I love it as much as all of my fellow music bloggers do, but I want to heap a little praise on what I do love; this song (it is, in my opinion, the best on the album). Goddammit, I could dance to this song nonstop! It makes me want to grow a ponytail, so I could fling it back and forth in sheer dance-driven delight! This song is a heaping helping of stuff that Kylie does that I love best, and it is definitely Kylie’s message to the world of pop music; you’d better get out of her way, because she is still bringing us some of the best that pop has to offer.

Scissor Sisters – Whole New Way
Well, the Scissor Sisters have also released a new album very recently, and while I am a huge fan of theirs, I have to say, that I am not loving the new album; more along the lines of liking it a lot. With that being said, this song may be one of the best songs that they have ever written and recorded; it is utterly BRILLIANT. THIS is the Scissor Sisters at their absolute best, and I cannot stop listening to this song. I love it so completely, that it just sticks out, and overshadows the rest of the album for me. Perhaps it is because this one is so great, that the rest pale in comparison. Regardless, I am enjoying the new album, but I personally love the first two a bit more than this new release. Again, that doesn’t mean that I don’t like it, because I really, really do; after all, this song is on it!

Joshua Radin & Schuyler Fisk – Paperweight
I was recently watching Dear John, the just-kinda-okay movie with Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, and this song was one of the songs playing in the background, and I instantly jotted it down as a song I must download. It isn’t a secret that I am a Joshua Radin fan, and this is definitely up there amongst his best songs, in my opinion. I love when they work hard to pair music with movies and TV shows, because it really makes the experience of watching something so much more engaging to me; and in this case (as has been with many before), I have found an amazing song as a result.

So there’s your Friday five… what did you think? Let me know, and as always, tell me what you are listening to as well! Have a great weekend.

5SF: november 30

Hey there! Back from a week off, it’s your five song Friday! This will, unfortunately, be the last one of the year, however, because as I have mentioned many, many times, December will involve the presentation of a new CD each and every day!! That’s right! I am going to bring you my top CDs of 2007, and it is going to be fun! There is some good stuff that has come out this year, so get ready, because my best of list is just around the corner. One note about tomorrow; I am going out of town today, and won’t be back until Sunday, so I am going to try and post the post with the date tomorrow, and just see if that works. If not, I will post it on Sunday, along with the December 2nd selection. Either way; the music is coming at you!

Now, on with this week’s five song Friday!

Sugarland – Stay
Yesterday, I was telling a friend of mine about a rumor that I heard about Beyonce coming out with a country album, and I was reminded of the really good cover of Irreplaceable by Sugarland. In order to give her a listen, I went to youtube, only to discover this amazingly beautiful song as well. I will warn you, the video may make you cry; but I felt it was so touching, that I had to post the video for the song. This song made me run out and get this CD. I LOVE Jennifer Nettles voice, and this song is just so emotive! A sad one, but a good one.

Shayne Ward – Breathless
Next up, is the most beautiful Shayne Ward; whose new CD Breathless just came out earlier this week. Let me start by saying, that I love this boy; not only can he sing, he is also so amazingly beautiful! I have loved Shayne for a while now, and I am really happy that his new CD is so good. If you like ballads, and boy band-type singers (think Justin Timberlake, only less “nubian” — as HE thinks he is), then you will love Shayne. I like to think that he is singing it to me… sigh. There are a few trite lyrics, but I can easily look past them; into his beautiful eyes.

Robyn – Be Mine!
Today, I am bring back an old favorite; Robyn’s “new” single Be Mine! I really don’t know what is going on with this record, as far as a US release, but I have had it for quite a while, and it is brilliant. I reviewed it back in one of my popcasts, and even played a clip of this song, but I feel compelled to share it again in this forum, because of how great it really is (as well as the new, very good video that was recently released). I feel like I need to say this: this is a perfect pop record. Let me repeat myself; THIS is a PERFECT pop record. Robyn really deserves some major props, because she is trying to do great things for pop, and while I can’t get her CD stateside, I do applaud and support her efforts. I hope that she has a second coming in the states soon; VERY soon. I love you Robyn!

Kylie Minogue – In My Arms
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1130_inmyarms.mp3]
Another amazing album that I have been blown away by, that came out recently, is Kylie Minogue’s tenth album, X. I have never really been a “Kylie fan”, having only really enjoyed a few songs here and there, but I have to say; this album is pretty damn good. This song in particular is my favorite from the album, and makes me want to dance all night long. What a fun song!

Kate Havnevik – Someday
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1130_someday.mp3]
Poor Kate got bumped a few weeks ago when I found the video for the new Sugababes single, but that doesn’t mean that I forgot how amazing this song is; so now she gets her moment on the 5SF this week! I heard some random song of hers a long time back, where I don’t know, but it prompted me to download her album and check her out. I never really could get into it, for whatever reason, but this song came up on random one day, and I just listened to it on repeat. It is amazing. I love the arrangement, and her haunting vocals send chills up my spine. This is a fantastic song.

Alright! I hope everyone enjoyed this week’s 5SF, because it was a little all over the place; but no matter, all these songs deserve the spotlight, because they are all good. Just to say it again, tomorrow starts the month of music, and while I am out of town, I am going to go ahead and write the post, and hope that by dating it for tomorrow, that it will show up when it is supposed to. If not, I’ll fix it when I return on Sunday! I hope everyone has a good weekend, and happy listening!
