voting based on the actual issues, not ignorance, fear, or willful defiance

Shit.

I just wrote and incredibly long post about why I can’t understand how people are going to let ignorance get in the way of the facts in voting this election, but apparently, my CPU usage has been exceeded, and when I tried to save it, WP ate it.

Mainly this sudden desire to talk politics again (the frequency of which has been marred by a past of ridiculous conversations with some readers) was sparked by a very ignorant conversation with my mother last night, who proved to me that Americans really only listen to what they want to hear, and then they make decisions based on only those observations. So this morning, I wanted to be sure that I was informed. I went to McCain’s website, and his wikipedia page, and read his stance on the issues. I also read Obama’s stance on those same issues. After I read both stances, and compared them, I really began to think about how our “society” is supposed to work. I can’t imagine that you would want to make things worse off for anyone; because, after all, isn’t this supposed to be a free and just society? Yet, after seeing how flawed many of McCain’s plans are with respect to the average American, as well as considering who he is as more than a candidate, I can’t help but wonder why there are tons of people out there that are willing to ignore injustice that will certainly affect them, just because they see one small feature of something in one candidate (fear?), that makes them choose him over the other.

I have not only read about McCain, but I have also watched how he uses fear and anxiety, much like Bush does. I feel even more like he is disconnected from the average American, and as such, cannot understand why people cling to stupid shit about Obama (like that he was born into a Muslim household, even though he isn’t Muslim now, and why that should matter; and what is wrong with Muslim’s anyway?), true or not, and let that make their decision for them. Vote for whomever you want to; I respect the fact that you are even voting, and I know that most of you have already decided. I know I have, and it isn’t for McCain. There are MANY reasons why not, but the main one, is because when I hear him speak, and I read his stance on the issues, I see more and more how disconnected he is from the general American public, and I don’t feel like he represents me at all; I don’t think he represents the majority of us. I have given him the mic, and now that I have heard what he has to say, I will say that he was unable to scare me into voting for him.

With all of this being said, I will say this: It is paramount that the strong help carry the weak. It is a fundamental trait of a successful society. It has been this way since man first grouped together and settled down on the first farms; and even before then, it was a requirement for us to survive as hunters and gatherers. It has allowed us to grow and flourish on this planet, and it is only through pulling together, and watching each other’s backs, that our problems are going to be solved, and things are going to get better. If we make decisions based solely on being the first one to the top of the ladder, our entire society will suffer; except the ones at the top. Those are the very ones that care more about dollar signs than they care about people and are currently the ones that are taking everything they can, and running the rest of us into the ground.

So again, after reading McCain’s stance on the issues, and judging him based on what he says and does, I can’t help but wonder, why should we hand the reigns over to another guy that shares the same values? I personally just don’t understand that at all. If you don’t see that, that’s something that escapes me, because I really did try to give this guy the benefit of the doubt. It isn’t his fault that he is rich; but what he has said about his plans for our country has definitely indicated that he is not right if we want things to get better for the average Joe/Jane. He has some good ideas, so please don’t think that I think he has all wrong notions, but the bad certainly outweighs the good, and I really hope he doesn’t have the chance on unleash them on this country; I honestly don’t think that our society will survive. We are cannibalizing ourselves, and electing another cannibal as our leader is a really bad idea.

McCain is far beyond what I can even comprehend as what one would call rational or even informed. He doesn’t think beyond a certain point, and even when he is given more information, he ignores it. It is why he still supports a war on Iraq, and it is why he will not answer the call to those screaming for help. If you need more convincing as to how out of touch he is, watch this:

I am just baffled at the willful ignorance he employs, and that of those that support him. I just hope that enough people are paying attention, listening, and finding out for themselves how wrong he is for President, and they get over any issue they have against Obama, and vote for him instead. Since this is a two party system, voting based on principle, history, or made up/incorrect character flaws is not only ignorant, it is dangerous and you will feel the consequences.

As I said, vote for McCain if you must, I respect your decision; just make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons, and that you are fine with all of the bad that will most likely come with your decision. If you aren’t a member of the upper crust who definitely does benefit from his plans and ways of working our society, can you do me a favor, and tell me, honestly, why you think he is the one to lead?

how much further to rock bottom?

Gas is pretty much coming up short here in ATL; it is getting hard to find gas at most of the gas pumps that I have seen around town. It just makes me wonder, just how prepared are we for disaster? I mean, this shortage is because of two hurricanes in the gulf coast… that happened over a week ago. We aren’t talking months, just a handful of days, and we are already out of gas. That is just scary, isn’t it?

Also, our seriously fledgling economy took a MAJOR hit last week, and in a half-assed effort that one can only see as a move to save his rich friends from being held responsible, our own president is trying to shove the tab on the back of already struggling Americans. Nice. I thought that people that said they were Republican but not conservative said so because of “fiscal responsibility” and “less governmental control”? What is going on then? This plan, being put forth BY Republicans is going to cause even further fiscal irresponsibility (which these companies started in the first place) and more governmental control over our money (by making us pick up the tab)? Do you think that saving companies that prey on the American public makes any fucking sense at all? I don’t… and I’m a Democrat. The government never should have been involved in making corporations something that are an entities that exist outside of the rules and regulations of basic business; if a small business makes mistakes, it has to pay for them. However, if you are a corporation, apparently, you can just be excused of that debt, and have the government take it for you (and then quickly put it on the backs of their citizens, or you, me, and every other tax paying American). Why don’t we get a say so in this decision? Isn’t our government supposed to represent us? What do we get to do when it clearly goes against our best interests? The more I read the news, the less I feel like I live in a democratic society; the government makes decisions, and we follow along without any of our needs even being heard. It sounds more like a dictatorship to me, which again, is supposed to be the opposite of the fundamental Republican, or even the financially concerned Libertarian beliefs, right? I may be wrong, but giving 700 billion dollars to these companies to save them just seems like robbing the poor to feed the rich to me. I can bet money that the money will be used to save executive jobs, while the working class will get shit on again. Fuck yeah… I’m proud to be a (probably soon to be starving) American. We get fucked, and the rich get richer… that seems to be the new Republican way.

Sorry for the ranting, I just feel so powerless; I invest money and try to save as much as I can, and things like this come along, where the government allow these companies to take it away, even though they are the ones that made the mistakes! I don’t understand why they have more rights than I do. I don’t think it’s fair, and in fact, I don’t think it should be legal. The only hope that I am clinging to at this point, is that Obama gets elected, and can do something better. Things are only getting worse, and worse, which really does make you wonder where the bottom line actually is. How bad is it going to get?

5SF: september 19

Hello boys and girls… it’s the first post of the new year of five song Friday! I have been pondering the idea of doing a themed 5SF in the near future, so stay tuned for that… Today, I have the usual fare of new songs and stuff that I have been liking; I have to say, that I love autumn… not only does it get cooler, but new music seems to saturate the scene more so than any other time of year. The roster of upcoming releases shows a lot of promise for the rest of this year as well… color me excited.

Kaiser Chiefs – Never Miss a Beat
From the very first time I heard the opening note of Ruby, I was a fan of the Kaiser Chiefs. This British rock and roll set instantly reminded me of the earlier days of Blur and Oasis, and with their previous album Yours Truly, Angry Mob, they showed just how good they are at making quality rock and roll music. After falling in love with YTAM (which made my year end list last year), and when I heard that they would be releasing a new album this year, it goes without saying that I was extremely excited. After hearing Never Miss a Beat, the first single from the album, and after playing it on repeat (it’s catchy!!!), I will say that I definitely have very high hopes that this record will be amongst my favorites of 2008. I cannot wait for the release of the new Kaiser Chiefs… Here’s hoping that it delivers in the way that I know it can.

Does It Offend You, Yeah? – Dawn of the Dead

I have to say, that it is a sound that we have all heard before… but it is a catchy one, no? I really love the intro of the sirens… nice touch. These guys remind me a bit of the Killers mixed with the Cure on this track, but their record is a whole other animal entirely (it is really strange… but in a good way). That being said, this song is a sheer delight, and I have been playing it on repeat… it’s a well crafted rock track. It also has a weird video. Perhaps my favorite part of this song, which is a real surprise in traditional rock and roll, is the use of the steelpan, which, if you have heard it in context, it usually make things sound very Caribbean and “islandy”. However, in this case, it just adds an air of delight to an otherwise perfectly fine track; it’s a very nice surprise. I have to say it though… why isn’t this song called Say So? Regardless of the name, this is definitely a great song.

New Kids on The Block feat. Lady GaGa – Big Girl Now
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_919_nkotb-biggirlnow.mp3]
Hear me out. I will admit that I was never that big of a New Kids fan. I thought Hanging Tough was a bit silly, but I had the tape. Cut to earlier this summer when we heard the news that the New Kids were releasing a new CD. Okay… what can we expect? After hearing the first single Summertime, I was sure that we shouldn’t expect too much; it isn’t very good. Yet, being the lover of all things pop that I am, I couldn’t ignore the whole record because of one dud lead off single. So, I downloaded it, and I saw that Ms. Lady GaGa, diva of all things pop, was on the song Big Girl Now. Needless to say, I was happy to see her name, and I knew that she could bring the pop to the New Kids… and she DOES. This song is catchy and fun… and it has Lady GaGa, who you may or may not know that I have a slight infatuation with… I may have mentioned her once or twice on the blog here before (Jesus release her CD already!!!!). Regardless if the rest of the record is a dud or not (currently, I don’t know, I haven’t really given it a proper listen yet), this song is undeniably HOT.

Sugagbabes – Girls
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_919_sugababes-girls.mp3]
Another Sugababes record, in just a year?!?! YES PLEASE!!! Their previous record was one of their best to date, and after hearing this horny song (no not that kind of horny!), I am tapping my feet and bobbing my head; all the while, even more excited about a new Sugababes record!! This song didn’t initially hit me, however, so I suggest that you give it a few listens… it is a grower, and it really is a great single. I have to say, though, that I have one major issue with this song… are they saying “here comes the girls?”, because that is what it sounds like. I doubt that is the case, it is probably one of those things that you hear incorrectly in songs (like “when I grow up, I wanna have boobies”), so I will just let that one go with nothing more than a mention. Either way, the Sugababes are back with more fantastic pop… and I am even more excited about the record now!

Joshua Radin – Today
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_919_joshuaradin-today.mp3]
I read that this song was used on Scrubs, because Zach Braff is such a fan of Radin’s music, but I will admit that I only first heard this song last week. Remember the clip of Ellen and Portia’s wedding that I posted about? Well, this is the AMAZINGLY beautiful song that is playing in the background. How beautiful!!! I love that he performed it at their wedding as well… how perfect. Seriously, though, there is nothing bad that I can say about this song; other than it stays in my head, and begs to be played on repeat. It is an extremely beautiful track, and I love it so very, very much. What a wonderful, albeit unexpected discovery. I love finding amazing music like this!!! Thanks Ellen!

Well, that’s all for this week. I hope you found something in the above tracks that you enjoy. Also, let me know what you are listening to… do it!!! Have a great weekend, kids.

5SF: september 12

So, I guess that today is the one year anniversary of the five song Friday, and a hooray for bringing the music for a full year is in order!! But it isn’t stopping, and is far from losing steam… Today, I am bringing you all random finds; some are random downloads, some are random songs I heard on samplers, but ALL of them are good. Let’s get right to this, shall we?

The Stills – Being Here
I found this song randomly on a sampler CD that I picked up in a record store not too long ago. I LOVE this song. The guy’s voice reminds me a lot of the lead singer of Guster, and they use a rock sound that is a lot like Melee, one of the bands that made my year end list last year with their second album, Devils and Angels. The song is fun, toe tapping, and the video is wicked cool (albeit, a bit Sleepy Hollow). I LOVE random finds (which is pretty much the theme of today); especially when they are as radio/ear friendly as this track. I will say, however, that I did download their record, and after one listen, this song and the other song I liked a lot from the sampler (Everything I Build), appear to be the only great tracks on the record. I will give it a few more listens before I give up though, because this song is really, really great, and by all accounts shouldn’t be a shot in the pan (or so I hope).

Los Campesinos! – Death to Los Campesinos!

I was recently recommended Los Campesinos! (see, I do pay attention when you guys recommend stuff… keep it coming!), and I will admit that I had heard of them at the time, and wasn’t that impressed. I thought they were fun, but it was almost like the end of a huge slurpee; the sugary goodness wasn’t sitting well on an already sugar filled tummy. Well, the aforementioned sampler had a live version of this song on it, and I’ll be damned if it wasn’t fantastic. As such, it totally reinvigorated my interest in Los Campesinos!, and as such, I have been listening more and more, and enjoying it much more this go round. The video is absolute madness, which I have to say, matches this song to a T (SEE what I mean about sugary overload!!!??). Either way, it is fun, dancey, and a fun song; regardless of how crazy it is!!!

My Favorite Highway – Bigger Than Love
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_912_myfavoritehighway-biggerthanlove.mp3]
Talk about surprises… I downloaded this on a whim, for reasons I can’t recall, but after one listen, I didn’t go back. Well, enter the new, invigorated interest in using my ipod nano… as a result, I have been paying more attention to exactly what is on my ipod (as opposed to dumping 30GB on there, and sorting through, which makes for too many choices, and MANY things being overlooked). Well, I gave this record a go the other day, and I literally kicked myself after hearing this gem. Not only that, but the rest of the record is actually quite good!! I guess I was in one of my usual “I’m not in the mood for this” moods at the time I first heard it, but I am definitely enjoying it now. The lead singer’s voice reminds me a lot of what I like in the lead singer of Switchfoot’s voice, and compliments the piano-twinged rock elegantly. This song is so ready for the radio, and throngs of screaming fans… it is really, really, really good! Like the Stills, it reminds me a lot of what I loved about Melee’s record; which again, is really good as well… in fact, I want something new from those guys; but I digress… this is about My Favorite Highway!! (Note: these guys are what I think the Jonas Brothers are going for… and they are nailing it, whereas the JB are well… not).

MGMT – Electric Feel
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_912_mgmt-electricfeel.mp3]
After really enjoying their song Time To Pretend (and featuring it one Friday long ago), I was pretty quick to write off MGMT as a one hit (in my book) wonder. Well, last weekend, I was hanging out with some friends at Smith’s Olde Bar in Midtown, and Electric Feel came on the jukebox. I thought to myself, “self, I have heard this before… and I LOVE IT! But who is it?!?!”. Well, my buddy dave whips out his iphone, uses the amazing program that you can’t use on the ipod touch (BOOO!!!!!) called Shazam, and a few seconds later, I am informed that the song that I am loving is ANOTHER brilliant track by the very MGMT that I had written off only months before. Shame! Shame on me! Well, needless to say, I quickly put that album back on the ipod, and have been listening to it for other gems. It has a few, and I will gladly admit where I was wrong; and I definitely was in this case. If you liked Time To Pretend, this one is a bit different, but definitely the electro-twinged rock that they did so well in that first track. I love the flute-sounding instruments that permeate the track… they are so much fun for my ears! (NOTE: It is annoying that videos get embedding disabled by request. WTF, is up with that shit?!?! /stupid “copyright” related rant)

Sarah Connor – Play

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_912_sarahconnor-play.mp3]
SURPRISE is the name of the game on this one!!! I downloaded Sarah Connor’s (no, not THAT Sarah Connor; although, how bad assington would that be?!?!) CD Sexy as Hell, because it was listed several times on iTunes alongside what I was listening to (in the “users also purchased). However, I never listened to it, like My Favorite Highway, and it was largely ignored until the recent revival of my ipod nano. Well, after listening to her CD, this song is the one that really stood out to me, because the beat is just as the title of the record suggests… it is as sexy as hell! The similarity of her voice to Jessica Simpson is apparent; however, she (thankfully) lacks that annoying factor that Jessica seems to be able to only control every now and then… (oop!). Either way, it is a fun hip-hop-pop song, sure to please that pop palate that I know so many of you share with me!

I hope that everyone found something that they loved this Friday, and as always, let me know what you think, and what you are listening to… there is just too much out there for us to go it alone!!!

5SF: september 9

I just had a realization that was kind of cool… next week is the first anniversary of the five song Friday!! The first one was on September 14th, which is also, coincidentally (massive coincidence) mine and James’ anniversary! This year is our fifth anniversary… it’s crazy how time flies! I can’t believe that I have been doing this for almost a year! Is everyone still enjoying the five song Friday’s? Any feedback at all? I’ll let you ponder that while I get to this week’s music…

Annie – I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_95_annie-iknowurgirlfriendhatesme.mp3]
First, there is something I need to get out right away: I HATE when people spell words in song titles like you’re with just a “UR”. It doesn’t make it more cool, and it doesn’t show that you are hip; it makes it look as if you are too lazy to worry about proper grammar. Ugh. Alright, with that said, I actually have been digging this song lately. I actually heard about Annie quite a long time ago from such power music blogs as popjustice, but perhaps it was the defiant part of me that took over, because I just blew her music off until recently. Well, I finally downloaded her CD, and I’ll admit that I like a few of the songs on it. I don’t think it is mind blowing, but it definitely fun, and something that you can have a good time listening to; regards going to this song especially.

Van She – Kelly
Holy shit! There’s a video! And it came out in 2006? WTF?!?! First thing’s first… Here’s another find from a massive pop blog that I decided to give a listen to (given his enthusiasm, I had to see what was going on!!!). Well, I love, love, love this song, but the rest of the album is just alright for me; it gets a bit repetitive towards the middle, on through the end. However, this song struck me immediately, and I was excited to feature it this week. Much to my surprise (hinted at above), this song actually came out way back in 2006, and hello youtube… there is even a video for it! Big surprise on that one! Either way, the song’s great, and the chorus is super-fun and extra catchy. I’m glad that I read pop blogs… they really give me the goods; which is one of the main reasons why I love doing things like this five song Friday on my own pop-filled blog… share the wealth, right?!?!

Jem – Crazy
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_95_jem-crazy.mp3]
Jem, you’ve done it again! The first song off of Jem’s upcoming release, Down To Earth (release date, September 16th) leaked a few weeks back, and I must say, as much as I loved her first record, I wasn’t actually digging On Top of The World as much as I would have liked. With her last record being so dynamic and innovative, I had high hopes for her sophomore effort, but by the sound of On Top Of the World, I was worried that I was going to be let down. Cut to this week, and the official release of Crazy as a single on iTunes… yeah, Jem still has it. This song is every bit as energetic and magnificent as her first record. She builds on her sound with this track, and proves that she has more to say with her music. Also, I cannot get enough of the banjo in this song!! Such a great use of a non-traditional pop instrument. Good form, Jem, I can’t wait for the record!

Lily Allen – GWB (Fuck You Very Much)
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_95_lilyallen-gwb.mp3]
First off, it says fuck a lot in this song, so if that isn’t your cup of tea, you have been warned. I love, love, love Lily Allen, and given the events of this week (RNC), I thought a fun political FU song was appropriate; especially since I only recently heard it. As much as I loved Lily’s first record, I have been chomping at the bit to get more stuff from her, and I was happy to find a few songs last week to satiate my appetite. This song is catchy, and I do think it is cool when people speak up for their political views, because you are always taking a risk; sometimes you get shunned for it (The Dixie Chicks), and sometimes you get praised for it (P!nk). With this silly track, Lily is saying what a lot of young American’s are thinking about our not-so commander and chief, and she will definitely get praises from me for putting it out there. I also cannot ignore the brilliant opening notes that are totally a throwback to the Carpenter’s massive hit Close To You; it really makes me smile to hear it throughout the song. I can’t wait for more new stuff Lily!

Nobody’s Angel – If You Wanna Dance (Thunderpuss Radio Edit)
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_95_nobodysangel-ifyouwannadance.mp3]
I recently hooked my spin class teacher up with a bunch of “old” dance music that I have sitting on my hard drive, and I literally smiled from ear to ear yesterday when this track came blasting out during class. This song is one of those songs that originally, weren’t very good… Then, a MASSIVE producer (oh how you are missed, Thunderpuss!!!) gets their hands on it, remixes it, and then you have a dance-floor filler that is so much fun that it is hard not to shake your booty all night long. This was exactly what I needed to boost my energy in class, and I was reminded of how much I originally loved this remix. It’s a gem from all the way back in 2000, but to me, it sounds just as great today as it did so many years ago. I can tell you, that if this came on the club, I would need to clear a spot on the floor to break it down… let’s get fierce!

Well, I hope that everyone is having a great Friday, and I hope the weekend is filled with fun as well. Let me know what you thought about this week’s selection, and as always, let me know what you are listening to… you never know when you will see it featured here!!!!

5SF: august 29

It’s my first five song Friday on the other side of 30! Well, to be quite honest, 29 and 30 feel very similar, in fact, I don’t really feel any different. I am sure that will change as times goes on, but I am going to let my motto this year be that of the fine Ms. Jenna Rink: I’m 30, flirty, and thriving! Woo hoo!

And back to the music… LOL… the music this week is all fabulous. Three of the tracks that I have chosen come from solid 5 star CDs that were released this year, all of which will surely make my year end “best of” list. I have posted songs by each of these groups before today, but their records are so good, that I wanted to focus more attention on them, so you can experience truly great music. The other two songs are also fabulous; one is a leaked track from the upcoming CD of an artist that made last year’s best of list, and the other is a song that I was recently reminded of, because of some buzz that the singer is getting on the blogs again lately. With that, let’s get started, shall we?

City and Colour – Sensible Heart
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_829_cityandcolour-sensibleheart.mp3]
Wow. You know what, I’m going to say that again; Wow. This song is amazing. Beautiful, thoughtful, powerful, peaceful, and again, amazing. I have been listening to the City and Colour CD for a while now, and for whatever reason, this song just hit me like a brick wall the other day. It reminds me of How My Heart Behaves by Feist, and when that one hit me when it did. Powerful. This song is one of the most amazingly beautiful songs that I have heard in a long time, and it is proof positive of why City and Colour’s 2008 release Bring Me Your Love is a solid 5 star album, and that it will definitely find itself amongst my top records of the year. I am seeing him with Tegan and Sara in a month, and I cannot freaking wait. The rest of the CD is great too, so make sure you do yourself a favor and get it now!

Infadels – Chemical Girlfriend
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_829_infadels-chemicalgirlfriend.mp3]
I posted a track by the Infadels a few weeks ago, which I randomly found on a indie playlist. After listening to that song, and getting into it, I snagged the record, and after several listens, I have been introduced into a fabulous record. This song comes from another one of the solidly 4 star rated albums that are sure to be amongst my top records of the year. These guys remind me a lot of the Kaiser Chiefs, yet with their own pop edge, kind of like Melee (a smidge). Either way, I have really enjoyed getting to know this record, and I am glad that I stumbled on this random find. This is probably my favorite track on the record; that chorus is just massive, and I can’t get enough! “Our love’s so good… yeah, it’s chemical…” you know what, so is this song!!!!!

Uh Huh Her – Wait Another Day
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_829_uhhuhher-waitanotherday.mp3]
After falling HARD for the first single, Not A Love Song, I pre-ordered this album, eager to hear what else Uh Huh Her was sure to dazzle me with. A week before it was released, they streamed the record online, and it was great; my anticipation only increased. However, when I got it, I was not really in the mood for it or whatever, so I didn’t really get into it as much as I had hoped. Well, that all changed with each new listen. This record is crafted masterfully, and each song is so well written and woven together with melody and beat that it really creates a beautiful music landscape for you to enjoy; again, and again. This is one of my favorite songs from the record, and it is one of those songs that really sticks to your ribs; you will be singing that chorus over and over hours after you hear it. The best part, is each time I hear this album, I love it more; it is a solid 5 star record, and I am glad that it has grown on me as much as it has. I love their writing style, lyrically, as well as how they craft their sound. This is definitely a group to check out if you haven’t done so already… one of the best records of ’08 people!

Jon McLaughlin – Smack Into You
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_829_jonmclaughlin-smackintoyou.mp3]
This track is a recent “leak” from Jon McLaughlin’s upcoming release Ok Now, which I am EAGERLY anticipating. I LOVED his last CD, Indiana, even ranking it amongst my top 20 CDs of 2007. As such, hearing that he was releasing another record this year has definitely got me excited to see what he will be bringing to my ears this time around. After hearing this track, I know that it is going to be more of that amazing sound that I love. This song is beautiful, powerful, and I just cannot wait for this CD to get released! I will be buying it the day it comes out, which is right now set at October 7th! Some of you ATL gays might recognize him from the most recent cover of David; which definitely signals that he embraces his gay fans. Yay for that, right?!?!

Isabel Guzman – Lovesong
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_829_isabelguzman-lovesong.mp3]
This track is one of those tracks that I heard quite a while ago, and instantly fell in love with. However, after not hearing anything substantial about a release from the artist over a long period of time, I naturally forgot about how much I enjoyed this track; as I often, unfortunately do with singles. Well, some recent buzz I have seen on the internets about Isabel made me go back and give this one a listen (as well as some of her other stuff), and low and behold, this song is just as good this go ’round. I really, really hope to see a full CD release from her, because this song is amazing (read A-M-A-Z-I-N-G), and I can’t wait to see what else she can do. I have been, and definitely will be, listening to this love song on repeat!

Well kids, that is the 5 songs to revel in for this long, magnificent 3 day weekend. Any plans? Yeah… I don’t know what we are going to do either, but I know this; I am just glad to have an extra day to do whatever it is that we will be doing! Take care, and as always, let me know what you are spinning! I DO listen to each and every suggestion; even if I don’t comment about it!!!

reflecting on a few news items

First up, something wonderful, because the last things are very, very disappointing. A couple of times, I have written previously about how I was really proud of athletes in the Olympics, specifically Michael Phelps, but there was one guy that I am beaming over even more. Matthew Mitcham is an Australian diver that took the gold in his event; even though it was highly favored to go to the Chinese (as all 7 other medals in diving did). One small thing… he’s gay! He was actually the only out gay male athlete to win a medal at the Olympics, and it was not only an upset victory, but he took home gold! After his medal ceremony, he ran up to the stands to embrace his mother and his partner. It’s great that the gay community can embrace another positive role model; an Olympic champion! Woo hoo! Make sure to check out the video of his performance and his medal ceremony, which apparently caused some controversy, because it wasn’t broadcast in full, and which is posted below:

Inspirational, to say the least!

Next, this harrowing revelation that HIV infection rates continue to not only soar, but that they are soaring at an even higher rate in New York City. We are more than 25 years into this disease; when are people going to take testing, safe sex, and prevention more seriously? I know that it is hard to do, but it is clear that people are ignoring something, because the increase in HIV rates cannot be described by “mistake” alone… get tested, and be safe people! YOUR LIFE depends on it!

This makes me feel so ill, that I want to violently puke. Seriously. Such a raping of human rights is disgusting, and should not be tolerated; especially in a country that we are currently occupying!!! What are we doing America? If we really want to make things better for the people of Iraq (which is continually touted as our mission), why not ALL Iraqi people?? Do the gay ones just not matter to us? It disgusts me that gay people are being treated so horribly, and being hunted in Iraq. Why can’t we offer them asylum? Why can’t we offer them protection? What are we even doing to help them? We have GOT to do something; these are freaking human beings, and they clearly have been put into a worse situation because of our actions. I can’t believe that things like this are allowed to happen; it really, REALLY lowers my faith in humanity. I will never understand how people can, a) be so cruel to their own people, and b) why we can’t do something to stop it if we are already there, ESPECIALLY since the situation they are in is a direct result of our military actions in Iraq? It’s not just gay people either, but they are actively being hunted… and it’s wrong! It just makes me shake my head, and hope that those gay people facing this “hunt” are lucky enough to get out with their lives intact. I will never ever understand religious fanaticism; it always seems to do way more harm than good.

Finally, a great piece of graffiti. Damn, sometimes, you just have to reflect, and feel good about the things that are going right in life; things could be worse.

5SF: august 22

It may not be the last Friday of August, but it IS the last Friday of my 20s. The end of a decade, and the beginning of another. My thirtieth birthday is quickly approaching this Tuesday, but I find myself not really focused on it. I want to hang with friends and have a good weekend (and next week), but nothing over the top. As for the music this week, I have a couple of new, hot tracks, and a couple of “oldies” that I recently rediscovered; one that takes me all of the way back to high school!! Let’s do this!

Solange – Sandcastle Disco
Holy shit, this song totally took me by surprise. I mean, I remember Solange’s last effort to take the music industry by storm, and to step out of Beyonce’s HUGE shadow, and needless to say, it fell a little flat. After hearing this gem the other day, I really believe that Solange has a chance for the second go round. Her CD is full of fun songs like this one, with that throw-back sound that everyone seems to be trying to do these days. I have to say, that it is almost impossible to listen to this song and sit completely still; I am tapping my toes and bopping my head as I listen to this right now. Also, be careful about this one, because it is a major grower, and will get even better with each listen… and the chorus WILL get stuck in your head! Bay-B-B-B-baby! I love it! Great choice, Solange!

Oakenfold feat. Britanny Murphy – Faster Kill Pussycat
I heard this song randomly on the radio again the other day, and instantly, I was like, “OMG! I remember this song… it is GREAT!”. As such, I have been listening to it all week, and totally wanted to “bring it back” and post it this week. This song is a thrill ride of a club track, and is totally fun. I am honestly surprised that more didn’t come from Britanny after this song, because her vocals are HOT on this track. The beat is banging, and the riff is delicious. This song is pure energy, and sounds like it should be a backing track on a race car game… it is fast and furious! Also, I have to say, that I love when sexy women laugh all seductively in a song, and Britanny does that in this one… swoon. Seriously, bring us more music, Britanny! All the other actors are doing it these days! If that never happens, at least she gave us a killer track to show us that yes, she has the goods… even if she is currently keeping them mostly to herself.

Juliana Hatfield – Universal Heart-beat

This is one of the songs that I literally listened to on massive repeat when I was in my first years of college. I was majorly into alternative music, and this song was one of those alterna-indie tracks that I really got into. I even managed to see Juliana in concert, and she was fantastic. This song came out of retirement for me this week when I noticed that Juliana had recently released a new CD. Naturally, seeing her name sparked the memory of this song, which I haven’t heard in probably a decade. After scouring the internets, I got my hands on it again, and I was taken right back to those days when I would ride around in my ’87 Sentra jamming out to Juliana. This song is awesome, and totally stands the test of time; and it really, really brings back some fun memories.

Lindsay Lohan – Bossy (Mike Rizzo Funk Generation Radio Edit)
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_822_lindsaylohan-bossy(mikerizzo).mp3]
Okay, it was probably a couple of months ago that Lindsay’s new song, Bossy hit the internets, and I have to admit that I didn’t initially like it that much. However, it really grew on me, and I have been enjoying it thoroughly. However, it wasn’t until I heard Mike Rizzo’s AMAZING remix that I really fell HARD for this track. The disco feel that he gives to this song makes it PERFECT for dancing and having fun on a Saturday night. I love this mix, and I just had to share it. A special thanks to Mr. Popmuse for hooking me up with it!

Brandy – Right Here (Departed)

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_822_brandy-rightheredeparted.mp3]
A couple of weeks ago, a new Brandy track leaked, and I have to say, that I was super happy to hear Darkchild doing his signature announcement at the beginning… I sat up and listened intently at that point. I have always been a fan of Brandy’s, and have seen her through some major ups and downs. I am really glad that she has a potential hit on her hands here, and I have been enjoying it, letting this track marinate, and it has only gotten better with each listen. I am curious to see what her next record will bring, because Brandy is actually capable of some hits if she puts her mind to it… she’s done it before, and I believe that she can do it again. I for one, am looking forward to the future of music for Ms. Norwood. The song ends and then does this weird re-loop thing for some reason, so please ignore the very end.

And with that… I leave you for a four day weekend. I’m not working the day before, or the day of my birthday… I think that I’ve deserved some time off!! Hope everyone has a great weekend, and if you live in ATL, let’s have some fun this weekend, shall we?

leaked: the fame

Well, the inevitable has happened: The Fame has officially leaked onto the internet. I have been talking about Lady GaGa’s debut for months now, and have been touting it as my most anticipated release of 2008, so of COURSE, I had to get it. Now that I have had a few listens, I am going to make a grand statement, and declare that it is the best pop record of the year so far. This record is MASSIVE.

The massive talent that Lady GaGa has for crafting pop gem after pop gem is clear and present throughout her debut, and I can’t wait for this CD to officially drop in the US. I will say this, if you think Just Dance is a great track, just wait until you hear the rest; the record exudes energy, disco, glamour, poptrash, and all things pure and unadulterated pop. I am very, very impressed. I will wait until the CD gets released to give it an official rating, but from what I have heard on the leaked version, it has earned a “unofficial”, solid 5 out of 5 stars , ladies and gentlemen.

Everyone will bow to the Haus of GaGa; the new princess of pop has arrived. An interesting thing about Lady GaGa that has come to my attention, came in a revelation that a friend of mine pointed out: how her voice does bear some similarities to Gwen Stefani (who you all should know by now that I completely abhor). While I do see what he is talking about, I think that the stark difference is that Lady GaGa (and the irony of Lady GaGa’s real name being Stefani is not lost here) is what Gwen would sound like if she were more talented in the realm of pop music. I cannot forgive Gwen for the serious misstep that was Holla Back Girl (*shivers*), and frankly, I haven’t heard anything that would be worthy of redeeming her in my eyes. So, I hear the similarities in voice, but seriously, Gwen doesn’t have anything on GaGa, and that is just fact so far as I’m concerned.

Finally, one thing that is sort of related to the whole leaking of GaGa’s CD, is the eventual backlash from the RIAA that I can naturally foresee. But what I don’t get, is why they would release a CD in August in Canada (eh!), and then have a release date for the same CD in the US almost 2 full months later. I mean, do you think that people aren’t going to leak it? Dumb. Just release the damn thing at the same time all over the place, and we will flock to the stores like your puppets as you want us to anyway, and fork over our hard earned money for the goods.

I guess it makes me irritated to have to deal with attitudes on downloading music because of the major bullshit like this release issue. I was in Decatur CD not too long ago browsing the CDs, and I overheard this conversation a “record exec-type” was having with the owner. He was literally bashing the hell out of anyone that would “dare” download music, and after he pretty much equated downloading music to the 11th greatest sin, I just got so frustrated that I put down the 2 CDs I was going to buy, and I left. Don’t these morons know that the people that download music actually buy a majority of the records that are released? If it weren’t for downloading music, I would miss about 80% of the stuff that I love, and I just don’t see how learning about new music, and then going out and buying it is such a bad thing. Whatever. Just a gripe of mine. There, it’s been said; but let’s not let it take away from the amazingness of Lady GaGa… who’s record is B-R-I-L-L-I-A-N-T. Now… just release it so I can get it!

5SF: august 15

TGI-fucking-F y’all!! This week, I have a few songs that I have literally been chomping at the bit to get out there for you, because they are fucking AMAZING. Seriously, there are some singles being leaked and released that are just out of this world… hooray for great music, right?!?!?! Also, remember how we talked in the past about the potential for dance music to make it into the top five for the week? Well, this week I have a floor filling club banger for you… it is just too great not to share! Alright, now… On with the show!

Duffy – Warwick Avenue
Now, it must look like I am getting on the Duffy train awfully late by posting this song this week, but to be honest, I haven’t really payed much attention to the hype of Duffy. Mercy really didn’t move me, and the rest of the record just really hasn’t captivated me in many of the ways it has the rest of the pop loving world. However, when I saw the video for this song, all I could think was “goddamn, that is beautiful”. Sometimes, it really does take a great video to compliment a song, and in this case, Duffy has hit the nail squarely on the head. The emotion, the crying, the soft singing, and especially the part where she has to stop and compose herself is FANTASTIC. The heartbreak in the song comes across loud and clear after seeing the video, and as such, I have finally been captivated by miss Duffy. Wow.

Georgia Wonder – The Girl You Never Knew
This is one of the songs that I have been scratching at the walls to share with you (I also posted about it on Jiingo last weekend). First off, amazing. This is an AMAZINGLY beautiful song, executed with such simplicity and form that it is chilling to hear. Accompanied with the simple, emotive video that channels the same technique Sinead O’Connor harnessed in her video for Nothing Compares 2 U, this is yet another example of how a video can take a fantastic song to the next level. The emotion in Georgia’s eyes is real, and you can feel it. As she tells her story about the person that she loved, but could never have is heart-wrenching, and the simple way she portrays it in the video is powerful. I also love how the song’s musical style reminds me of Stay by Shakespeare’s Sister (remember that song?? 1992 baby!), except it has no villainess in the song to take away from the gentle emotive nature of her lament. Amazing, right?

Lykke Li – Dance Dance Dance

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_815_lykkeli-dancedancedance.mp3]
Lykke Li is another one of those artists, like Duffy, that has been getting lots of praise from other music bloggers, but for whatever reason, I was waiting on something else from her. Well, her record, Youth Novels finally came out this week, and I will admit that it has some great gems on it. Specifically, this song really has me tapping my toes, and reveling in the beauty and gentle, child-like nature of Lykke’s voice as she sings about dancing. I have to say, that Lykke is another shining example of how Sweden really is an epicenter of fantastic music, and in particular, fantastic pop music. Seriously, there are so many fantastic things happening with there, it really makes me want to move to Sweden already!!! Sweden is to pop what Seattle was to grunge/alternative! I love it! If you like this song, check out her record… I will warn you though, some of the tracks near the end of it are kind of strange… but hey, we take what we can get, right?

P!nk – So What
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_815_pink-sowhat.mp3]
First off, I am going to say this: FANTASTIC form P!nk. Bravo. Cheers. I love you! Seriously, this song is so fucking catchy, and amazingly well done, that it is hard to do anything other than love it, and in turn, heap loads of praise on P!nk for bringing it us! This is the second song that I heard this past weekend that I was literally burning to get on this blog for you! P!nk’s last album made me a fan of hers for life because of how great it is, and this song just shows that she is an artist that we should definitely keep paying attention to, because she has A LOT more up her sleeve. One of my FAVORITE things about P!nk, is that she has such talent as far as being an artist, that she was able to overcome the typecasting her record label insisted on using against her (typecasting her as a hip hop singer for her debut, when she is more of a rock star; as indicated clearly by her subsequent follow up albums), and she not only managed to prove that she had the talent to back it up, but that she was even better than they gave her credit for. She is a passionate singer, and a great song writer, and I am elated that the leaked single from her upcoming CD is so freaking amazing; it really has me wiggling in my seat in anticipation for the record’s October release!! If her album is anything like her previous effort, I know that I am going to enjoy it… and if this single is any indication of what we have to look forward to, then I think that I am going to LOVE it! Also, need I mention how fucking HOT P!nk is? Jeebus!

Antoine Clamaran feat.Mario Ochoa & Lulu Hughes – Give Some Love (Klaas Extended Mix)
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_815_antoineclamaran-givesomelove(klaasmix).mp3]
DAMN! Just when I tell myself that there aren’t any club banging, amazing dance songs coming out right now (that is, other than remixes), this song hit me over the head with the force of a diva and a beat that makes me shake my shit like nobody’s business!!! The song is pretty repetitive, much like, well most other dance songs, but one thing I love about this song, is it doesn’t do what makes most potential dance hits into failures… it doesn’t use shitty lyrics to try and fill the song. The simple “give me some LOVE LOVE” is practically enough. All we want is a diva to give us the chorus, the tag line, the whatever goods we need to accompany a fantastic beat (and in this case, a little filler, but filler that isn’t just STUPID and VAPID filler), and cut the other shit out. This song is a shining example of how dance music SHOULD be made. It is catchy, it is hot, and it makes me want to dance all night long. I have NO IDEA who any of the people are that are associated with this song (with the exception of Klaas, whose remixes I have heard before, and I really thank them for this one!!!), but I wish I knew them so that I could extend a HUGE thank you for restoring my ever fledgling faith in the state of dance music today. THANK YOU!!! (FWIW, I found this gem on the Promo Only for August, and I couldn’t be happier to make this random discovery and then pass it on to you!!)

Whew… that was tiring, wasn’t it!?! Good music wears me out! Just kidding… I live for this shit. Seriously, great music makes me eternally happy, and is one of the major sources of joy in my life. I hope that you guys found something that can bring you some joy this week, and as always, TELL ME what you are listening to… I’m dying to know!
