sotd: Kelly Clarkson – Piece by Piece (Idol version)

Sometimes, the emotion of a song is so palpable, that even the artist singing it gets choked up. This song from her most recent album of the same title, is beautiful, and certainly one of my favorite from the album, but this performance is just, wow. And she released a new version of it, much more stripped like this performance, and it is heartbreakingly beautiful. I love artists that are this talented, and still in touch with their journey and themselves. Kelly Clarkson is truly a music idol, not just the first American one.

sotd: You+Me – You and Me

Thanks to my friend John Hersman for alerting me to this MASTERPIECE!!! Holy shit… City and Colour, my favorite, favorite, favorite band/singer-songwriter, teaming with one of my other favorite singer-songwriters, P!nk? This is AMAZING. What a gorgeous ballad, beautiful love song, and, I know, just a taste of a crazy-amazing album to follow.

I cannot wait for October 14.

sotd: Sara Bareilles – King Of Anything

Sara Bareilles – King of Anything from Sam Garvey on Vimeo.

I posted several weeks ago about this fantastic new single from one of my most favorite singers in the world, the amazing Ms. Sara Bareilles, and I STILL cannot get enough of this fabulous song. I seriously cannot wait for the new album, and in the mean time, I have this amazing single (and the cute video!) to keep me company. What really puzzles me, is why this song isn’t soaring up the charts right now; it has hit written all over it. Eh, I guess the American music-buying-public don’t know good music, do they? Then again, that’s no surprise, now is it (just take a look at most of the current top 10… need I say more?)?

song of the day: Erik Hassle – Hurtful

While I do realize it has been 2 weeks since the last 5SF, I had clinical today, and I am just too exhausted to wax poetic about five new songs. However, I do have enough energy to gush over one, so I thought I would do a song of the day to tide you over to next week’s new 5SF.

This is a song that I have posted about before, in fact, I featured it on the 5SF back in May of 2009. I honestly never thought that his debut would get scrapped and we would have to wait almost a year for his damn fine “debut” album to surface here in the states, but as I mentioned on the last 5SF, Pieces is FINALLY here, and it is overall, pretty amazing. The stand out tracks really, really stand out, and this one is a new classic as far as I am concerned.

I saw the (new) video (above) for Hurtful recently, and it rekindled my already strong love for this amazing song, as well as my love for the amazing Erik Hassle; and as such, I wanted to scream from the rooftops about this song… again. This song (surprisingly) may have not made 2009 Erik’s year, but it’s making 2010 look like it certainly could be; if there is any justice, this song is going to blow up the radio in the coming months.

shakira in a sparkly vagina cave

I wouldn’t consider myself a fan of Shakira’s new song, She Wolf, and the video isn’t really something that I would consider my cup of tea. I’m not referring to her hyper-sexuality in the video, nor her basically thrashing around in almost no clothing (a flesh colored outfit! I get it!). I’m talking about the fact that she spends a fair amount of time in the video dancing in a giant sparkling vagina. Here are some screenshots:

I guess, mostly, I just wanted to know what being a “she wolf” has to do with dancing around in a sparkly vagina cave. If the sly look in the last screenshot says anything, apparently for Shakira, it means something. What that is… I don’t know.

AAAwoooo!

llamas are not kleptomaniacs

I love llamas, and I am totally serious. I think they are absolutely adorable. While I think that the people in the video take things a little far with how intricately they dressed up their llamas, that isn’t why I posted the video.

There really are only two reasons for me posting this video: one, llamas are cute (which I already mentioned), and two, I absolutely love Rachel Mazac’s response to some woman asking her if her llama would eat her jewelery. I love that Rachel just rolls her eyes and says, “they don’t eat jewelery, they’re not kleptomaniacs”. So true Rachel. So true.

sotd: Robyn – Be Mine (live acoustic)

I gave it some thought, and I feel like the 5SF may introduce some great music to you guys, but every once and a while, I really want to focus on a particular song. So, every once and while, I’m going to do a post about a song of the day (sotd), and I hope that you will find it just as enjoyable (if not moreso) as the 5SF. It will also give me a chance to feature a song that I feel like deserves more than a one time posting in the 5SF; for you see, I don’t repeat songs in the 5SF, no matter how many times I play them on my ipod.

For the first sotd, I wanted to post this live, acoustic version of Robyn’s AMAZING song, Be Mine (h/t Arjan):

What an amazingly beautiful version of the song! I still remember the first time I heard Be Mine, and still to this day, it is a song that I truly love. A friend of mine gave me a copy of her fourth, self-titled album, and I instantly fell in love with it. At the time, it was an import, and it took like 3 more years for it to finally be released here in the US; and I had been enjoying it immensely that whole time. The whole album really highlights how incredibly talented Robyn is, and songs like Be Mine show the massive contribution she is giving to pop music. I can’t wait for a new album from her, and I hope that the wait isn’t too long.
