gay themed
- Adam and Steve
— This one kind of drug along the first time I saw it with many funny moments peppered throughout the film; but a second viewing revealed a hilarious film. This is basically a gay rom-com, but has some truly hilarious randomness. And, I mean, Parker Posey is in it. It is worth it just for that, in my opinion.
- Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
— Basically, two drag queens and a transsexual take a journey across the Australian outback in a pink bus named Priscilla. Um, what’s not to love. This movie is flawless. And very hilarious.
- All Over the Guy
— I have to admit that I bought this for the cute guy from “2 guys, a girl, and a pizza place”. With that said… it is pretty good, although somewhat sad, given that no one but the straight people end up getting exactly what they want.
- Another Gay Movie
— Pretty much a spoof of all of those teen movies, even the one that spoofs all of the other teen movies, but this one focuses strictly on sex (much like American Pie). It is actually quite funny, and pretty, well, gay. You gotta see it for yourself.
- A Single Man BR
— This is basically a beautiful, haunting, lavish, and downright gorgeous portrayal of my biggest nightmare. The story is of a man who tragically, and suddenly loses his lover of many years, and the way in which he deals (or doesn’t) with his tragic loss. Seriously, my nightmare, but done up beautifully by the AMAZING Tom Ford. Also, Colin Firth is WONDERFUL in this film. I think I fell in love with him all over again.
- Bad Education
— While I am not a huge fan of having to read subtitles, I have to say that I did not mind with this movie. It follows the story of a boy who is “done wrong” by a priest at the school he attends as a child, and the steps that he takes to rectify things. It is a tale of intrigue, betrayal, blackmail, and cross dressing. I haven’t seen a movie this interesting or unique in a while; this is a must watch.
- Bear Cub
— This movie is about a man who comes to take care of his nephew after some problems the kid’s mother runs into in India. The movie is very good, and is very well made, with two major complaints (and the reason it is only getting 4 stars): the subtitles were horrible. Since the movie is in Spanish, which I don’t mind, I would expect them to be so that you can read them, but since everyone talks so fast, there are times when the words only flash on the screen; also, the end of the movie wasn’t really an ending, it was just the end of the movie, and I believe they could have done a little better with that. Other than that… the movie is definitely worth seeing. Not your typical gay movie for sure!
- Beautiful Thing
— This one of my very favorite movies, and with good reason. This is based on the play by Jonathan Harvey, and it is wonderful. You will feel for both Jamie and Ste as they succumb to childhood gay tendencies, and realize their feelings for one another. All of this while battling gay bashers and abusive families. Very great, very well acted and directed. I LOVE IT!
- Best in Show BR
— First of all, you own this right? Cause you should. This is, hands down, one of my very favorite movies. This movie is instantly quotable, never forgettable. It is simply wonderful. And when you find out that most of the dialogue is improvised, it just gets better. Here is a taste of what you can look forward to:
“Could you take that pepperoni stick out of there, I just want to hold it.”
“Now, Tyrone would like some of those beef kidneys, so we’ll have a half pound of those.” “No, not the kidneys, they have the membranes, I don’t wanna have to pull those things off.” “I’ll take care of the membranes.” “Randy, you could pull the membranes off.”
“What are you a wizard? A genius? There is a pet store at the bottom of this hotel? Why didn’t you tell me that before? And you call yourself a hotel manager!”
“We have been around so long. We are so lucky, so lucky, to have been raised amongst catalogues.”
“We have so much in common, we both love soup, snow peas… we love the outdoors… and talking… and not talking. We could not talk or talk forever… and still find things to not talk about.”
- Big Eden
— The premise is simple… gay guy in a little town where being gay doesn’t seem to matter to anyone, including his homo-erotic buddy from high school. It is really, really good, and would make a great date movie. It is cute to see the people of the town being so supportive of him, and it makes me wish that all people could be this caring.
- The Birdcage BR
— This movie was one of the first DVD’s that I ever bought, simply because it makes me laugh. It is always fun to have Nathan Lane in drag… no matter what. This movie is a feel good hit, that is very gay themed, which provides the general public with an over-the-top view of gays.
- Boys Don’t Cry
— Not only is this movie fantastic, it is probably one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. It is the true story of Tina Brandon, who decides to live her life as a man, and the consequences. She endured a lot, and Hillary Swank amazingly captures the gritty-ness involved in this tale. This movie is a must see for everyone, and it is both shocking, and scary.
- Brokeback Mountain BR HD
— I wrote a pretty in depth review for the blog, which can be accessed on my blog. The quick and dirty version goes a little something like this: Brokeback Mountain will change you. It will make you feel differently about how to look at love stories, and how to feel when you see what happens when people fall in love; against all odds. It will teach about acceptance and love. It will also make you wish more movies were made like this one. It will definitely touch your heart; it did mine.
- The Broken Hearts Club
— Believe it or not, this movie hits the nail on the head. It totally captured what I felt when I came out, what it means to make new friendships with gay people, and captures several different perspectives of gay life. I highly recommend this movie to anyone. I am even thinking of showing it to my parents. This movie makes me remember what it was like to come out, and how awesome it feels to be out. How it feels to have friends that love you no matter what, and what it feels like to search for, and find, that which you are looking for. Love this movie!
- De-Lovely
— So this might not totally fit here (it could really go in Drama or Musicals EASILY), but I felt that it was important that it go here. For this movie is about a man who was gay, so why not, right? Anyways… This is the story of Cole Porter, who was a famous song writer, and Broadway writer. I felt the way that this movie was done was fantastic, and the music is wonderful. Don’t be surprised to see this soundtrack in my collection some day. Also, it has some GREAT performances by famous singers in the movie. The whole thing is acted as if Cole’s life is being played for him on the stage. It was great. I loved this movie. Absolutely loved it. Now that’s de-lovely.
- Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds
— MUCH better than the first one. Lots of humor, and definitely some inappropriate moments. Yeah, inappropriate doesn’t really cover it, to be honest. Either way, one of the main characters, Troy, is one of the hottest guys I have ever seen. And, there is a full frontal!!! Definitely a nice view, and there is a pretty good story and the acting isn’t that bad either. I would say skip the first one, and make sure you see this one instead!
- Far From Heaven
— Dennis Quaid in a gay role?? SIGN ME UP! It is visually stunning and shocking to see the way those times can be portrayed in today’s light. This makes me sad for those that were forced to experience discrimination or exclusion for any reason.
- The History Boys
— This is the touching story of a group of boys trying their best to learn as much as then can to pass a national placement test, and make it into the most prestigious university in England. The story focuses on the group of hyper-intelligent boys, and one of their instructors, who is the reason why this movie is in the gay list. I love the way they interact with him, but I would have told him HANDS OFF if he grabbed my bits like he does theirs all of the time. The movie is based on the Tony winning play. It is definitely touching, and definitely a great movie; although I don’t know if it translated well, because I never saw the show.
- If These Walls Could Talk 2
— For those of you that like to cry, get a hanky. This is three separate stories about lesbians living in one house over different decades. It is great. Very moving, and it provides an interesting perspective on the development of our society, both mainstream, and gay society.
- Imagine Me and You
— Finally a cute and believable romantic comedy about two girls falling in love! Seriously, this is such a cute movie, and both girls are extremely, well, cute! It is kind of interesting that one of them is married, and choses the girl over her man, but it is definitely sweet to see people follow their hearts; too bad for the guy! Definitely to become a lesbian classic!
- Latter Days
— This is a movie all about an incredibly hot Mormon (did I mention INCREDIBLY HOT… I usually don’t go for blondes) who is “confused”, and manages to come out after living next door to his over-sexed gay neighbor (who isn’t so cute). While this movie is really sweet and actually nice to watch (thanks to all of the boy candy), I think it is lacking in the way the plot flows (much like other independent films). There are times when it feels like it stops and jumps forward suddenly, which definitely takes points away. Either way, it is a cute story, which does contain some sense of “learning about oneself” and will probably evoke some feelings of your own coming out… only with hot Mormon boy. Check this one out.
- Milk
— The story of Harvey Milk, one of, if not the first out person in political office, and his struggle, and ultimately untimely death dealing with homophobia in politics. Sean Penn is incredible in this role, and the movie is sad, but an incredible story about an amazing man. Thank you Harvey Milk for all of your hard work, dedication, and for blazing the way for us. You are an inspiration.
- The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green
— Holy shit, batman! I was honestly beginning to believe that they couldn’t make a funny, well written gay movie with hot actors!!! But they did!!! This movie is laugh out loud funny, and the main actor (who was in Camp), is hot, hot, hot! A definite for any fan of good gay cinema/comedy.
- Normal
— This is the HBO movie about what happens to a couple when the husband decides to undergo a sex-change operation. This movie shows the emotion involved with accepting change, both in a family, and in a man. It is compelling to see Roy accept the change that he feels in is heart, and go through this change, despite the opposition of his family and his community. The main message of this movie is tolerance, and it is beautiful. This movie is fantastic.
- Saving Face
— The movie follows Wil, a doctor and lesbian, who’s sexuality is hidden from her family by traditional Chinese family “values”. When Wil’s mother is forced to move in, and Wil finds the girl of her dreams, the back and forth familial struggle to maintain one’s own character, while staying true to a family’s perceptions is challenged. This is probably one of the best romance movies I have seen, and the fact that it is gay/lesbian is a huge bonus for me. Now if only other gay cinema could sit up and take notice; this is a wonderful example of gay cinema that should be held as a standard. Wonderfully written, and masterfully executed. You will laugh and cry, and hopefully, love this film as much as I do.
- Soldier’s Girl
— Even though this movie was really good, and very emotional, it is pretty disturbing, especially since it was based on a true story. My heart really goes out to Barry Winchell’s family, and I hope that no one has to hear that their child was a victim of a hate crime, especially not that they were killed for being gay. Definitely see this movie.
- Summer Storm
— A German coming of age story where a boy realizes he is gay, and ends up being forced to face the issue at rowing camp. A cute little movie, if you can distract yourself away from the horrible German… I don’t know why, but I have always found it a horrible sounding language. Given that, I would definitely recommend this one.
- Weekend BR
— This is a story about a random hook up between two men that turns into something so much more meaningful to each of them, and the weekend that they spend together shapes them so much more than they were expecting. The movie is moving, poignant, beautiful, and tender. It is about as real as you will see romance portrayed between two men, and about as wonderfully as I have seen. Definitely a fantastic film, and certainly one of my favorites as well.
