romantic comedy

  • 13 Going On 30 BR — This movie is a new take on an old idea, mainly the movie BIG where a kid wishes to be older and gets their wish. This time, though, a little girl named Jenna Rink wishes to be 30, and she wakes up to be 30, having lived her whole life up until that point already (without prior knowledge). Of course putting a 13 year old in the life of a 30 year old is really funny to watch. Jennifer Garner is SPECTACULAR in this movie, and is very convincing as a 13 year old little girl. This is a must see. You will be smiling the whole movie, because not only is it funny and super fun to watch, it is just sweet and warm at the same time.
  • About Time BR — This is probably one of the best romantic comedies I have seen in years. From the guy the made Love Actually and Notting Hill, it does not disappoint in the tear-jerking, oh my god this is lovely moments. This is honestly, the ultimate love story, and it has the perfect amount of humor and romanticism that it totally succeeds. I loved this movie, and every time I watch it, I have nothing but smiles on my face, and super warm feelings in my heart. Please, please, please make more movies Richard Curtis! You really know what you are doing!!!
  • Because I Said So — A totally cute rom-com all about how sometimes a meddling mother needs to just back off; or, if she insists on meddling, listen to your daughter!! Fun, cute, and worth seeing if you like rom-coms.
  • Bend It Like Beckham — I seriously had no idea where to put this one, so I am sticking it here, cause it kind of has a little romance thing in there. This is an awesome “mom and dad, let me do what I want and am really good at, which is soccer” movie. I loved it! The British accents are great, but a little thick, just so those of you that don’t like that sort of thing know the drillio before getting in on this!
  • Bridget Jones’ Diary BR — Renee is at it again! Love her. This movie is so freaking cute. And honest… “I like you just the way you are.” I would love to have someone say that to me. That is so freaking sweet. Also… Oscar Nomination here… duh… great acting by Renee. On a side note: I bet it was for that scene where she acts out being eaten by wild dogs in her apartment… hmmmm.
  • Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason — I loved the first Bridget Jones. Loved it. All I want to say about this one is this: Bridget honey… get some self esteem!! 90% of her problems in this movie deal with her trust issues and self esteem. If she could just be happy. Oh well, it is still a great movie, and a great romantic comedy at that.
  • Cake — This is a very predictable story of the girl that “can’t be tamed” that falls for the opposite guy, and ends up loving him and wanting to be with him. Given what I just said about it, it is seriously cute, and definitely a RomCom worth seeing. The lead guy is a HOTTIE too. I don’t know why I never saw this advertised for the theaters, but either way, it was definitely a cute film.
  • Catch and Release — While it does start on a bit of a morbidly down note, the movie definitely shows you how you must move on when life throws you a curve ball. Jennifer Garner is a delight in this movie, and while I did like it the first time, it was much better after a second viewing. If you want to see a definitely unusual rom-com, then I suggest you check this one out. Anything with Jennifer Garner in it, at least for me, will always “garner” my attention anyway.
  • Coyote Ugly BR — After seeing this movie, I wanted to be a bartender, but I don’t think that they want guys dancing around like that, even though I can. I want that job… Of course I will also discover myself in the big old city, and find a hot man and write songs for LeAnn Rimes to sing. (note to all the gay men out there: you secretly love this movie, don’t you? Don’t deny yourself this guilty pleasure!)
  • Down With Love — Remember how I love campy, fun, greatness?? Well, this movie is all of those things. I LOVE THIS MOVIE! This movie is fun, cute, and has a great twist in the end. How can you dislike a story about a woman who writes a book to convince women that they too, can have sex like a man… sex a la carte!! Works for me! (Women’s lib in the 60’s, far out.)
  • Empire Records BR — This is one of those movies that kids will see 20 or 30 years from now, and be like, really? Is that how the 90’s really were? The grunge music, fashion, and the now strange environment that is a record store; yep, they were all real. Great soundtrack, great movie, and great cast; so many young stars are in this film! It is a great teen-ish flick, which really takes me back to high school. And don’t forget; happy Rex Manning Day!
  • Garden State BR — I loved this movie. It just felt good watching it. Some of the people you can really relate to, and others, well, you can’t. I absolutely love the humor of it as well, even though it contains some pretty dark subject matter. This is what you would call a well thought out romantic “comedy”, for people that may or may not enjoy straight up romantic comedy, set to great music. This is honestly one of those movies that you watch, and then realize, that it has managed to capture what you want to be real life. Don’t miss it. “Don’t tease me for my hobbies, I don’t tease you for being an asshole.”
  • Ghost Town BR — Despite the fact that I keep calling Ghost World, this movie was definitely memorable. Ricky Gervais is hilarious, and so utterly charming that you cannot help but love him; even though he doesn’t much care for anyone else. The writing is great, and the chemistry between the actors is great. Also, it is down right hilarious, and Kristen Wiig is even in it! This movie rocks.
  • Hitch — I must say that this is yet another one of those movies that I really didn’t have a desire to see, but was pleasantly surprised at how well I liked it. Hitch is all about a guy that hooks guys up with the girls of their dreams for a living, and then does everything wrong (or does he) when he tries to hook up with the girl of his dreams. Kevin James is extremely adorable in this movie, and I absolutely love that they make it so the average guy can find love. This is definitely a feel good rom-com.
  • The Importance of Being Earnest — Mr Wilde, I believe you have success! Leave it up to a gay guy to write a dramatic love story full of fun and wit… totally. This movie is great, and Dame Judy Dench is stellar. You get ’em girl.
  • Jerry Maguire — Didn’t Cuba Gooding, Jr. get an Oscar for this movie?? I thought that the real star was Renee here, but that is just me. You had me from hello, Renee, you had me from hello.
  • Juno — It is pretty clear why this was nominated for so many awards; it is really well written and really well acted. Ellen Page is great, but my favorite moments came from my lovely, and favorite actress Jennifer Garner. The scene where she touches Ellen’s belly in the mall is just moving. Great movie.
  • Just Like Heaven — Honestly one of the weirdest premises for a romantic comedy (girl is in a coma, and her disconnected spirit haunts the guy that is subletting her apartment); yet with the light hearted nature of Reese Witherspoon at the helm, it really works. It keeps you from focusing on the dark subject matter, and really has fun with the story. Given the dark points, and serious undertone, it isn’t laugh out loud or anything, but it does have
    its moments.
  • Just Married — Ashton and Brittany… fun times. I love the part where they check into the nasty hotel and the roach is on his neck… just so you know, that is another one of my nightmares. The nasty hotel, not so much the roach… gotcha! Seriously, this is a fun movie. She throws an ashtray at his face, that is fun isn’t it?
  • Kissing a Fool — This is a very interesting movie, both for the “proposition” and for the outcome. I have to say that it is pretty much different from most of the other things I have seen, and I like that. And great line: “True love cannot be found where it does not exist, nor can it be hidden where it truly does”.
  • Love Actually BR — Billed as the ULTIMATE romantic comedy… it totally delivers. This movie was romance, love, heartbreak, happiness, and laughter. I totally loved this movie. There are several intertwining plots, and everyone seems to come together in the end. This is romantic comedy at its best. I loved this movie! I don’t want a lot for Christmas… but all I want is you.
  • Love and Other Drugs BR — The story of a drug rep that falls in love with a woman with Parkinson’s and basically a picture of their early relationship. It’s sweet, and funny at times, but definitely leans more towards the romance/drama than the comedy, but it’s there, so here’s where it belongs. Overall, very enjoyable, and Gyllenhaal is smoking hot in it (as is Hathaway); and naked a lot. They both are. Great acting, and good movie overall.
  • The Mexican — Just for James Gandolfini playing a gay guy, it is worth it. Totally. This is a really cute movie, and really fun. MUST!
  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding — New title: My Big Fat, In-your-face-family who helps me make over my dull appearance for a great man who loves me, and shows me nothing but utter love and devotion my entire life. They give her a house, come on. I want to be GREEK!!!!
  • My Super Ex-Girlfriend — What an interesting concept: you break up with your significant other, who happens to be a superhero and a super freak, and they use their super powers to make your life a living hell!!! HA! If you love Rom-Coms and you are also a huge comic book-super hero freak like I am; this is the PERFECT mash up of both!
  • Notting Hill BR HD — I am a sucker for a good romantic comedy, and this one is fantastic! Julia Roberts is not too nice at many points of this movie, and walks all over Hugh Grant, but then makes up for everything with: “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” TEARS!
  • Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World BR — Based on the series of comics, this movie is like watching a really fun video game. I love the way they directed it, and it is very fun to watch. Overall, Michael Cera gets a bit grating by the end, but the soundtrack is amazing, and all of the “evil exes” are fun and make for a great movie. This movie gets better with each viewing. There is also a lot of humor and action in this film, and Pilgrim’s gay roommate, played by Kieran Culkan, is a true stand out.
  • Shakespeare In Love BR — I love Gweneth, and I love Shakespeare. That is all. This movie is so wonderful and so sweet. It is also very witty, which is always nice. This is undoubtedly one of my very favorite movies. Such a wonderful portrayal of love. LOVE THIS MOVIE!
  • Silver Linings Playbook BR — All about an un-diagnosed bi-polar guy who loses his shit when he finds his wife cheating on him, and ends up institutionalized for a while. When he returns home, he has to get his life together, and tries his best to look on the bright side, and find the silver lining in things. He meets another sort of crazy girl who is grieving in her own way, and the two naturally decide to dance together in a competition. Despite the fact that this movie is sort of off the wall, the performances are amazing, and both actors deserved Oscars, even though Jennifer Lawrence was the only one who won. While I am sure many people will find this movie uncomfortable, this movie is full of very realistic portrayals of mental illness, and laugh out loud hilarious dialogue and interaction between the cast. Great, great movie.
  • The Story of Us — Whoa! This is hitting the nail on the head, hard. If I didn’t know any better, I would think that these two were married in real life, and I almost wish that they actually were. I cried at the end… That is all I will say.
  • Sweet Home Alabama — Reese Witherspoon is my sister in this movie, and her mom is my mom, seriously. I loved that. I totally feel like Reese though, with living far from home, and my parents pretty much reacting in the exact way hers did. Plus, we made Ethan Embry gay in this movie?? Why not expand that role!!
  • Trainwreck BR — I’ll start by saying, that if you don’t find Amy Schumer hilarious, you should have your funny bone checked; it may be missing. She is goddamned hilarious, and this movie, her first full length, where she is the writer, is hilarious. This is one of those, holy shit, I am laughing my ass off from the beginning to the end types of films. There are so many moments in this movie where I was crying laughing so hard, and I couldn’t believe some of the shit she says and does. Great, great, great romantic comedy!!
  • Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! — Okay, I know what you are thinking, but seriously, this movie is hot! It is cute, funny, well-written, and lovable. All of the actors are beautiful, and are instantly likable. Kate Bosworth’s character is adorable, and so is Topher Grace’s! Josh Duhmel is just hot, okay? What a wonderful little romantic comedy about a girl who works at Piggly Wiggly winning a date with Tad Hamilton, and learning about love that is right in front of her the whole time! LOVE IT!
  • Zack and Miri Make a Porno BR — As much as I already loved Kevin Smith, I think that he outdid himself here; this movie is comedic genius, and actually a film that (despite the title), leaves you warm and fuzzy inside! I almost fucking cried! Seriously, this is a GREAT romantic comedy; IF you like dark comedy. Also, Seth Rogen, will you marry me?!?! Seth is one of the most adorable men on this planet!!
