troubled times for satellite radio ahead?

I couldn’t help but be intrigued by this blog post that I read this morning, which if you are too lazy to read (it’s short!), suggests that satellite radio will not survive our current recession, and in fact, may be gone before 2009 comes to a close. I find myself wondering if I should fish or cut bait with my subscription, because I doubt they will refund people once they go under. Additionally, I have wanted to install an iPod adapter for my car ever since I got it, and through internet research, the best option (especially in radio-heavy Atlanta) is to get an installed option. However, there is a catch; it requires the XM/satellite radio link for my car’s model, and I would have to give up XM radio. So… should I just go ahead and give up satellite radio and get my iPod ready for the drive, or should I wait and see how things pan out? I am not going to make any decisions today, or even this week, but I will be watching XM/Sirius to see what happens with them officially in the coming months. I may finally get my wish of iPod functionality in my car!!! But at a price… no more BBC Radio 1; I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

With Pandora and podcasts, I don’t miss XM at all.

That would totally suck, since I hate regular radio and listen constantly to bbc radio one. What will I do without a daily dose of ‘oh what’s occurring?’ I’m holding out that someone will buy it and programming will remain much the same.

When I bought my Civic in September of ‘07, I received three months of XM for free and of course, I bought a year subscription when that time was up because I had become addicted to it (primarily b/c I was driving up to Calhoun a lot and you can’t get Atlanta channels).

4 days ago, XM sent me the following email:

“On March 11, 2009, the XM Radio Online listening platform will be upgraded to a higher quality digital audio and no longer included as a part of a base subscription at no charge. If you renew now at http://www.xmradio.com/lockintoday, you can continue to listen online for FREE for the length of term you choose — but only if you act quickly.”

So they’re asking people to renew even though they’re about to file for bankruptcy (which I’m sure a lot of people don’t know about). What bullshit.

When I heard the news I had the same thoughts–that I shouldn’t renew. I think my renewal date is in May so I have some time to think about it. But I haven’t been as happy with the music selections since the merger, and my car does have a 6 CD changer and an iPod dock, so I might just go without ole XM when it expires.

I never got any email like Jen did.

If anything, I like the mix a little better now with the merger. But yeah, my life would suck without Radio One.

There’s always podcasts and live streaming – you’re a creative guy! I’m sure you’ll think of something :’)
