torchwood season premiere tonight!

In case you may be like me, and are saddened by the fact that there is practically NOTHING to watch on TV these days (thanks to the writer’s strike), I have good news; I am here to rescue you from TV boredom!! Tonight is the season 2 premiere of Torchwood, the most fantastical show, fresh from BBC America! For those of you that have no idea what Torchwood is, here’s a brief “synopsis”, from wikipedia:

Torchwood is a science fiction drama television programme, created by Russell T Davies and starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles. It deals with the machinations and activities of the Cardiff branch of the fictional Torchwood Institute, who deal with supernatural occurrences.

Basically, it is technically a spin off of the recent revival of the Dr Who series, but in my opinion, it is much more serious (no camp here folks), and more adult; not to mention, better in my opinion. It is great television, and has a serious edge to it, which is both refreshing, and fun to watch.

If you need any further reason to get on board with Torchwood, check this clip out from one of my favorite episodes in season one:

In my opinion, this is seriously the most romantic and beautiful kiss I have ever seen on a TV show. Wow. If you liked that, and are looking for a new sci-fi based drama, check out Torchwood! I know that I am glad that I did, and I seriously cannot wait for the season premiere; which comes on tonight on BBC America!

LOVED it! Good interplay between James Marsters and Barrowman. Loved this zinger when they were entering Torchwood headquarters:

Jack: This is the entrance for tourists.
John: I remember the last time you said that…

In fact, I think I will make the my quote of the week on my blog!

I love Torchwood and all things Torchwood. I loved last season. I love this season so far. I will probably love next season. Did you know there are a series of books available on Amazon, so if you really can’t get enough…

First, I’m glad that BBC America gained the foresight to broadcast Torchwood so soon after the original UK showing. This is going to mean the difference between having the stateside fans turn on their televisions versus turning to their favorite torrent sites.

Second, the first episode … it was good. The humor was more than welcome after all of last season’s never-ending inner turmoil. Don’t get me wrong. Love Torchwood. It’s a Who spin-off that’s not about a mechanical dog, so how can I not love it? But come on … must every episode be about Jack’s longing to be a real boy instead of the awesome, immortal, time-travelling Pinnochio he is? Anyway. Liked the first episode, though it was rather heavy on the fan service.

We all knew going in that if Spike Marsters was going to guest, then there was bound to be some Captain on Captain action, but the western showdown lead-in — coming through the swinging double-doors, even! — was a little corny. Nobody said “This town ain’t big enough for the both of us,” but they might as well had.

As for the rest of it, it seems to be off to a great start. The team dynamic is stronger. The one-off lines are better. “It is a lot more fun with him around.” Looks like Gwen’s going to be a lot more interesting now that she’s had some off-camera leadership time. Martha Jones is coming, which spells all kind of awesome to me. And there was more action and getting things done in this episode than in about three of last season’s.

If there is any lesson that Torchwood needs to remember from Doctor Who, it’s that there is nothing wrong with run-for-your-life chases, big-ass explosions or last-minute rescues.
