Mitch, I agree, government should not be allowed to tell us what we can or cannot buy. Please pass that message along to Ms. Clinton (her plan makes it a crime to not purchase healthcare).

I will not claim to know that much about SCHIP, however, I would like to add that with our healthcare system in such a mess, I am not really sure this would help much. There really needs to be a complete overhaul of the system. Of course, we may need a complete government overhaul as well to straighten it out.

Dave, I have to say that your statement is kind of going in both directions as you want less government involvement, yet you would get behind it if they were to regulate what the people (who would qualify for it) can buy? I understand what you mean, but just think about what you are asking......

The bill Congress is asking Bush to sign (veto) does exactly the opposite that SCHIP was supposed to do. It provides healthcare for people who are clearly not poor and simply choose to not purchase healthcare for their children as well as providing healthcare to children of illegal immigrants (people who have not contributed to the government kitty).

You know I'm a major advocate for no government healthcare but I can see the necessity of SCHIP. Personally, I would like to see it administered in the private sector via charity, but if the government is going to do it, at least don't increase it to the level of abuse.

Basically all this bill does is encourage the entitlement mentality and does not encourage people to even attempt to fend for themselves. We should be teaching people how they can afford healthcare for their children rather than providing it for them. They should put a stipulation on the bill, if you subscribe to SCHIP for your children, then you are not allowed to have a cell phone, cable/satellite tv, a new car, or other luxuries. That's something I could possibly get behind.
