where in the world is duane?

The answer: In bed. And, I have been in bed for literally, the entire day; in fact, I am writing this, sitting in bed with my laptop (thank God for that wireless USB adaptor that I bought way back when).

Why have I been in bed all day, you ask? Well, yesterday, I was walking about the house, picking up Sydney’s toys, which were due a good washing, and I leaned down to get one in the kitchen, and upon standing up, found a sharp, shooting pain in my back. It was so intense, I literally fell face first to the floor. After laying there for a few minutes, I felt much better, and made my way back upright; but not totally. I was able to walk comfortably bent over a bit, and as long as I leaned to my right, I was somewhat comfortable.

I went on with some caution, but figured it would be better this morning. Much to my surprise, it wasn’t. I woke up this morning, literally screaming at the top of my lungs in agony. Imagine the worst charlie-horse you have EVER had, multiply it by 10, and then place that in your lower back. Literally, I made my way out of the bed, because I had to pee, and I was seriously contemplating just peeing sitting on the floor, because standing up caused me so much pain. (I did manage to force myself to get up and use the toilet, so don’t get too excited). If I could rate my pain level on a scale of one to ten, this was easily a ten.

The worst part, is that it is still here. I have managed to limp around the house a TINY bit today, but for the most part, I have stayed still in the bed; with the occasional writhing in agony when my back decides it wants to spasm, just because I moved.

I did manage to watch the entire series of Kitchen Confidential, as well as Superman Returns, though, which was something to keep my mind off of the pain. When James got home, he brought me food (didn’t eat all day until he got here, around 6), and he kindly hooked me up with my laptop, and a new movie selection. I wanted to go to the doctor, but I am serious when I say, that the only way I could get there, would be on a stretcher.

I got lots of pain meds, and muscle relaxers from my doc, and I hope that they ease the tension in my back, and manages to stop this awful spasms.

Updates will provided as necessary… hopefully, they will be good updates. Wish me well!

Sweetie, go to a doctor NOW! Lay in the back of the car and tell James to drive slow. Something is wrong that you need to get taken care of. I did miss you today :( Oh, and I understand the pain. I have two kids. ‘Nuff said.

Definitely wishing you well Duane! I hope you manage to make your way to the doctor to at least be checked out! I know it will not instantly ease the pain, but you really should try to go!! Get well soon!!!

Sounds a little like what I did back in February ( http://barryarnson.com/2007/02/24/two-things-i-realized-this-week/ ) but much worse I am sure. Probably a pinched nerve if I had to guess. You should go to the doctor is you have health insurance (I didn’t so I had to ride mine out for almost two weeks). Get some muscle relaxers and feel all better. In the mean time you should take a double shot of aspirin. Hope ya feel better!

I fell down a flight of stairs once, totally jacked my back up. I was able to function for a few weeks but I could still barely move. I finally relented and went to a chiropractor. Best decision I made. After the first adjustment, I nearly passed out but felt so much better. I went 3 times a week for about 2 months and he was able to get me all straightened out again.

Now, I know the last thing you want is to be “straightened out” but you should still think about going to a chiropractor.

    Pure DPB at his best!

My vote is no chiropractor. Witch doctors…all of them!

Yikes!! That sounds really scary, especially just coming on out of the blue like that. I hope the medications help, but if not, get thee to a doctor!!

    Hope you feel better soon…

I’ve noticed that people either love or hate chiropractors. I’m not sure if the haters had a bad experience or what would be causing their feelings of angst but from someone who has benefited significantly from a chiropractor, I give them two enthusiastic thumbs up.

Pbody, why must it be all or nothing with you?

Thanks for the well wishes you guys!!!

Dave, I will NEVER go to a chiropractor ever again. My doctor told me that a chiropractor is the WORST person that you could go to if you have any sort of injury that is serious with your back. Since I had a ruptured disk when I was younger, all going to a chiropractor did for me was make things WAY WORSE. I am elated that your experience was good (as was James’), but the one trip I made to the chiropractor resulted in 4 weeks of pinched sciatic nerve and extreme pain. He made it way worse, so I will just wait it out with heating pads, medications, and a follow up visit to my doctor.

You need painkillers, netflix, zifty.com, and an attendant (oh James!).

    Hope you feel better soon.

Hope you are feeling better today - let me know if I need to come and take care of ya - that is if James is too busy with stuff!!

wendy, you just need to come on down anyway… no need to take care of me, James is doing a good (albeit, slightly annoying) job!

Come visit soon! You are welcome any time (except August 16-17, I am on a site visit). We will talk about a planned trip, okay? Love you!

    duane…

    OUCH!!!

I have bone spurs on my lumbar discs, and every once in a while, one of them will nick the sciatic nerve.

What my doctor told me was to keep moving, even if it’s just walking back and forth in the apartment hallway. When the back muscles are in spasm, if you don’t move around, they get even tighter.

That may not be the case with you, but, the doc told me that sometimes, you’ll just be doing something innocent, like reaching for something in the cupboard, and OUCH, it starts all over again.

So my friend, you get my sympathies, and a hug when you’re feeling up to it.

Take care, and get well quickly… at least you have the notebook so I can get my daily dose of Duane still :=D

Can’t wait to visit - we need to plan soon. Tell James I said to pick up the pace on the service for ya!!
