New Orleans, Kansas, and another veto?

Apparently, Bush has gone out to visit Kansas today, specifically to check out the destruction that occurred in that small town that was pretty much wiped off the face of the earth. While I do feel bad for the people that were affected in this small town of 1600, one question just keeps poking at my brain; have we completely forgotten about New Orleans?? I mean, Katrina displaced and killed a hell of a lot more people, and in many parts of the city, the place is still the equivalent of a third world country! Where is the priority to restore their utilities, homes, businesses, schools, lives, etc? There are still people living in used FEMA trailers for crying out loud!!! I am all for helping the people in Kansas, but I can’t believe that this outcry of attention to rush to their aid hasn’t at least sparked some attention at the complete opposite way Katrina was, and is still being, handled. I would like to see some more light shined on that “little” problem we seem so happy to forget about and sweep under the carpet. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, really, considering these are the actions of a sociopath we are talking about. I just wish things could be different, for this country. Is that too much to ask, Mr. Bush?

Additionally, I read that Tony Snow has already said that Mr. Bush is already planning to veto the newly revised bill the Congress and the House are working on. WTF, you asshole? Remember, you said you would compromise!? This just proves that what I have said all along is 100% correct: you are not willing to compromise. You have your own set of priorities, and you don’t care at all what anyone else says, you want us in Iraq forever. What’s worse, is that you, Mr. President, DO NOT care about the troops, and you are a big, fat, stinking hypocrite!!!!! You accused the Democrats of politicking (they are politicians, remember?) with this bill, when you are doing the same thing. If you really support the troops, why not get your head out of your ASS, fly back to Washington, and actually represent this nation, Mr. President? The nation is speaking loudly, yet you continue to turn away and refuse to listen. This is so infuriating, to know that so many voted to give such an evil, vindictive, know-it-all so much power. Apparently, the goal of the Bush presidency was to do no good, and that is a goal that has definitely been achieved. I can’t imagine what those in Congress and the House are going through, because it is only so long that you can beat your head against a wall before your head starts to bleed. Ugh. Keep the fight, people!! He is definitely WRONG!

While I understand your frustration with the ongoing struggles of Katrina victims, I think it’s unfair to not at least give “them” an opportunity to right the wrongs of the past by showing an improvement in natural disaster aid and awareness.

Agreed. But can’t we do that without continuing to ignore the problem that still exists in New Orleans (not to mention the surrounding areas)?

You’re right… screw the people in Kansas.

Apparently, the goal of the Bush presidency was to do no good, and that is a goal that has definitely been achieved.

Other than issues surrounding Iraq, what has Bush done that’s so bad during his tenure. The country’s economy is the best it’s ever been and unemployment are at historic lows.

Show me your proof for this statement. I believe that you are incorrect, sir.

And I didn’t say “fuck ‘em” about the people in Kansas; I am just trying to illustrate the need for perspective.

Who’s ignoring it? In every.single. news item about Kansas there was a direct comparison to Katrina, and those issues had been brought up with the White House and feds. I think it was made clear that the Katrina/ FEMA fiasco was much larger than imagined and it will still take months if not years to resolve.

“Other than issues surrounding Iraq, what has Bush done that’s so bad during his tenure.”

Lol… that’s great. It’s the converse of saying something like, other than inventing the electric light bulb, what did Thomas Edison ever do for modern society? (Yes, I know he didn’t really invent it, but you get my point…)

    Bush has…
Installed political cronies lacking qualification for their positions within regulatory agencies. Many of these cronies have long standing records opposing these agencies they are heading, creating obvious conflict of interest issues. (See the EPA, IRS, NASA, FEMA, etc.)

Cut spending for all departments except for Security and Defense, which has helped feed increasing rates of poverty and near poor.

Infringed on civil liberties through the military commissions act, FISA scandal, etc.

Dave, I think you may be overgeneralizing a bit too much.

    Unemployment data over time.

The first thing we said when we saw on the weekend news that FEMA was headed for Kansas, well, they were doing good until they showed up.

It should be a national disgrace that the gulf region is still in the mess that it is in. But it is like sleight of hand, they keep drawing your attention away from the important matters with other fluff.

Perhaps FEMA learned their lesson and will assist that town in getting back on their feet… please… I don’t think so. I hope they will, but if Katrina is still their best work, then it won’t happen.

I cannot understand what is taking so long to repair the Katrina damage… perhaps they should get some people from Florida to show them how it’s done, they seem to bounce back fairly well from major hurricanes.

Ok, going back to my corner to mutter to myself.

ming, yeah, I went a little over board with my use of adjectives. Unemployment is not at “historic lows” … it has consistently been on the decline under the Bush Presidency since the “dot-bomb” and 9/11.

The economy however has continued to grow. I know the stock market is only one indicator but look at it, we’re plowing past 13k like it’s our bitch!

I know the stock market is only one indicator but look at it, we’re plowing past 13k like it’s our bitch!

Which is totally interesting, since it almost saw a depression-like crash only a month or so ago… weird how “awesome” our economy is.

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 dpb May 9th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

yeah, that day sucked… it’s been shooting upwards ever since.

but seriously, “depression-like”??? Now who’s embelishing the adjectives?

  12. Gravatar Icon 12 duane May 9th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

I’m using the one Greenspan used.

I just think that saying the economy is awesome is a vast oversimplification, that doesn’t consider who it is better for.

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 dpb May 9th, 2007 at 4:36 pm

When the economy is growing, everyone benefits. Of course there are that choose to not take advantage of that, so be it.

I will be the last person that claims Bush is an awesome President but I can’t complain about how well things have been going on the home-front under his administration. Could things have been better under Gore or Kerry? Possibly. I don’t know. I do know the taxcuts wouldn’t have happened which definitely helped spur the economic growth however.

You say I’m narrowminded… do you not feel that you’re not narrowminded for not recognizing the good things that our country has experienced under Bush? (was that a triple negative?)

Oops. Someone doesn’t know where spending bills originate. Ooops.

You are totally right; if by everyone, you mean only the rich and those that own stock in big business. What is happening in the real world, is that the gap between poor and rich is growing wider and wider each day, and the middle class is essentially being eliminated.

But everyone enjoys it??!!! I bet little Jenny, who just happened to be born in South Atlanta to parents that don’t have enough money to send her to college and can’t find a way to go to college on her own, and as such, is subject to struggling through life because of her lack of education, enjoys the fuck out of making minimum wage at two jobs. In fact, I bet her life is like a goddamn party, dave. She is also an asshole for not taking advantage of this awesome economy! Right? You are so right!!! In fact, now that I know that if Haliburton, IBM, and Microsoft make billions of dollars, and continue to ship their jobs and money overseas, that their successes will somehow make it easier for me to afford gas to get to work every week, or that it will mean that my grandma will be able to better afford her medications, I can rest easy! Thanks for ENLIGHTENING me dave!

Oh wait? You mean that’s all FUCKING INSANELY IDIOTIC BULLSHIT, and completely the opposite of the truth? Fuck! And here I thought that we had it all so great, because of our great great great economy!!!! Dave, wake UP dude!!! If you really believe what you wrote, you are completely insane. I am serious. I can’t believe that anyone would be able to fool themselves into believing what you wrote; not even you. I hope to fuck I am wrong.

I have no problem admitting when Bush does something right, perhaps ALL bad was the wrong thing to say, but I say 700,000 Iraqi deaths, and 3300 American causalities drastically outweighs a benefit that he has thrown our way. I apologize for using an all or nothing statement, because the last thing I want, is to argue in the manner that you, and those that believe what you believe, do.

(dave, I admit that this comment is especially mean, but that level of willful ignorance pisses me off like nothing else. I really hope that it didn’t offend you too badly.)

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 dpb May 9th, 2007 at 6:37 pm

    you are completely insane

I’m not the one that needs therapy just to get through the week.

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 duane May 9th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

You know dave, you totally got me! You know I may be clinically depressed, but at least I am still in touch with reality. Additionally, a person that seeks help for a problem is much better off than one that willfully remains ignorant.

I think George Bush started those wildfires in Georgia and California. He also started cancer. Is that guy an asshole or what.

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 Rightwing Bugboy May 9th, 2007 at 7:16 pm

The economy has been doing great. So great the network news programs don’t want to report it for fear it will undo their hard work reporting only bad things about Bush. I remember back in the 90s how they celebrated every Wall St milestone and credited Clinton.

It’s not the responsibility of government to ensure every need is met. Expecting someone else to help Jenny (while blaming those who don’t) is like squealing about global warming while driving your fossil fuel car to work every day. Same mentality.

I have a couple of statements to make about Shrub (Bush for those of you who do not know who I am talking about) and his “presidency”. Every reason he has given for this war so far (that I am aware of) has been a wash. His latest reason was to keep terrorists out of our country. Well, hello….the men planning the attack on Fort Dix were living in America. His war has cost this country billions of dollars and thousands of lives and this does not include the lives of civilians in Iraq. Shrub’s approval rating is at the lowest it has been since right after 9/11 (when it reached an all time high) and there is a reason for that. WAKE THE FUCK UP PEOPLE! Get out of that 28% that are still walking around with their eyes closed. This man is a terrorist according to the FBI definition of terrorist (Terrorism is the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives. - US Federal Bureau of Investigation) and he is an idiot. Combine the two and you have one hell of a “president” to stand up for.
Tell the people living in “small town America” how well the economy is doing. That will make them feel better about going to pick up their unemployment check and food stamps. I just do not get people standing up for this idiot we have given the title “president”, nor will I ever.

I totally love that conservatives really believe that the news is liberal and hides things that are “pro-Bush”. That’s totally funny to me.

    I think the function, or dysfunction, of the news media in our society is a very rich and interesting topic. Not to toot my own horn, but I have discussed the topic at length in front of my own internet mirror;
    1. Riding with Angels
    2. The Propagandists
    3.
    Bernie Goldberg.

Here are a few books/studies on the topic from various angles that I have found very illuminating.
    1. Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media
    2. The New Media Monopoly
    3. On Bended Knee: The Press and the Reagan Presidency
    4. Public Opinion
    5. What Liberal Media?: The Truth About Bias and the News

I do love the fact that when Bush went to visit Kansas, they were all, “thanks for coming, but you know that half our resources happen to be over in Iraq at the moment.” National guard, Mr. President. It’s all well and good to have them assist over there, but when the home front needs it, let them to what they were created to do!

I’m leaving for NO next week and I’m nervous about what I’m going to see. I’ve been there only once before and that was pre-Katrina. I know how different it is going to be, but I do want to do my part by spending my money in the city.

    Justin,
What must pass Congress and be signed is a *bill*. That bill originates in the House.

“By precedent, appropriations originate in the House, with the Senate following suit.”

    http://www.rules.house.gov/POP/approps_proc.htm

    Duane,
You claimed to watch the news a lot. I’m starting to doubt that.

I provided you a link to details of the bias a while back. I guess you ignored it.

“do love the fact that when Bush went to visit Kansas, they were all, “thanks for coming, but you know that half our resources happen to be over in Iraq at the moment.” National guard, Mr. President.”

That was proven to be false. The rumor, if you couldn’t predict, was Howard Dean told the gov. to say that. If that is true he and the gov. should be forced out of their respective positions.

Thanks, Bugboy! I am passing your comment along to the Washington Post and to a White House press secretary. Apparently, the president can stop proposing budgets each year.

Can you tell me how a bill becomes a law? I am so interested in civics and I need someone really smart like you to teach me.
