I was awoken by a familiar sound this morning, a sound you don’t like to hear; a dog barfing in my bed. Poor little guy wasn’t feeling good, and proceeded to hack and upchuck every 30 minutes or so for a few hours. I held him and hopefully, I made him feel better. I am going to take him up to the vet this afternoon just to have him checked out; this is the second time he has thrown up dog food since this whole recall fiasco. I am seriously freaked out to maximum right now, and really hope that nothing happens to my little baby. I will update as necessary, but right now, he at least seems to be feeling better. I do know one thing for sure; there will be NO MORE dog food in his bowl for a while. No more treats either, which he is going to hate! I will have to think of a substitute…
Also, there was apparently a high speed police chase this morning, in which 2 suspects were apprehended, and another is on the loose. The best part is, that the chase ended like 2 blocks from my house, interestingly enough on the street where my friend Deb lives. I have heard helicopters swarming overhead all morning; it is good to know what they are looking for… but bad to know it is just outside my door!! Ah, the joys of hood living, right? I hope that they catch whoever they are looking for without further incident. This is the type of thing that really freaks me out. Add that to the puppy sickness, I am all wound up this afternoon!
Alright… off to the vet! Here’s hoping little man is alright, and just had a little bout of upset tummy. I can’t handle much else.
UPDATE: Apparently, he is fine, it was just a bout of tummy ache. He got a shot and some medicine, set me back $50, and got a new toy out of the deal. Mr. dog is doing well.

Hope all’s well with the pooch.
“Ah, the joys of hood living, right?”
This looks like a racial comment. Are you going to wiggle out of this one?
It actually isn’t because I wasn’t saying we live in the hood because there are all dangerous Tommy Hilfiger wearing vagabonds in the streets. We live in the hood because we live in East Atlanta, where many of the houses are vacant and run down, and there is a process of rejuvenation in full swing. The area is in the process of gentrification, and it is still considered very “hood” by many that live here. And by those that live here, I mean white, black, etc.
Good try though!
I’m sorry you think run down, crime ridden neighborhoods are black. I guess by the time the gentrification is complete you won’t have to worry about such things.
How’s that?
Um, well, I never said that they were black; that was you. So, if you think so, that’s fine, but it is a little bit racist, you know.
…everyone’s a little bit racist… sometimes… LOL
Well you used black lingo, right? You referred to a part of town that is majority black, right? And I was referring to your words, right?
Anyway, I take exception to everyone being racist. I agree with Dave’s definition of genetic superiority, and I definitely don’t think any race is superior. Well you can say black skin is superior and stuff like that but that’s really not what I think this issue is about.
Whatever works for you, man. And that last part was lyrics from Avenue Q.
Glad it was nothing serious. My cat has been throwing up for years, so I can’t blame the cat food scare.
As for living in the hood, you’ll have the last laugh when your house doubles in value over the next couple of years, compared to those who’ve opted for the safety of OTP.
Actually that depends on what and where you buy OTP. I made a great profit from mine. Now I’m looking at condos in Midtown and finding many only go up in value by 1% a year. That means you’d have to keep it 7 years or so to break even on a sale.
Houses, however, do far better. I know people near Va Highlands whose homes went from like $150k to $400k in about 5 or 6 years. But I don’t think I want a house right now.
Duane mentioned the gentrification of his “hood” which I would think means in about 5 to 10 years your statement will be correct, should he want to bail out and live somewhere else.
My favorite area for houses is Morningside but I just don’t got the $800,000 to buy.
Bugboy, you should buy in EAV!!! Lots of great homes, and even though it is hood in some parts, the gentrification is fast. Our house has increased in value by $30k in 3 years. That is quick growth! And yes, you are totally correct about condos, the market is FLOODED with them, and it is going to be harder and harder to unload them with the rate at which they are building new ones.
Get a house! I just say that because I love living in a house…
What does EAV stand for?
East Atlanta Village.
Ok I’ll look into it. Problem is I’m in love with Piedmont Park and really want to stay in this area. The bungalows around here tend to be in the 300′s and 400′s, and the ones on the other side of Monroe (Va-Highlands) are even more. That much debt makes me nervous so I need to think about it more, but you are correct–this place is flooded with condos for sale and they are building even more.
Oy. I lived in the hood for years. Years before many folks of a certain socio-economic demographic deigned to travel south of I-20 and buy a home. Years before it was “trendy” and “a smart investment” (my quotes, not yours).
And you know what? I fled (as did many of my friends). Tired of waiting for these amazing transformations. Tired of watching the crack dealers on my block – and battling them in vain with a hamstrung police force. Tired simply of driving home down the nastiness of Moreland Avenue and Boulevard to get to my place. Tired of the backwards community meetings which chose to ignore the real problems. It is possible to have the pioneering spirit beat out of you…
Yes, there is a Target on Moreland, and a Starbucks in L5P. Yes, the property values have increased. But the “just wait five years and this will be a whole new neighborhood” thing really takes more like ten years- and that’s a long damn time.
And try as you may, it is IMPOSSIBLE to avoid the subtext of a racial comment when speaking of gentrification. At the end of the day this ALWAYS means that the poor black people are moving out, and the wealthier people are moving in. Yes, some of the wealthier people are not necessarily white, but it all amounts to the same thing.
Buy in Midtown. Hold that condo, and enjoy the park. Your day-to-day happiness is far more valuable than any misty forecast of riches and decent shopping.
Erik, sorry that it didn’t happen when you where there; take heart in the fact that we really appreciate your pioneering efforts!! Also, WELL said!!!!
