damn damn damn damn

No, I am not frustrated because I can’t get Eliza to learn to speak properly, I am frustrated because I just got off of the phone with Geek Squad. Yep, you heard me right. 3 days into this new computer, and already, there is something amiss. Fuck.

Basically, I noticed it yesterday. Whenever the computer goes into “sleep” mode, and is then “awoken” from this state, it no longer recognizes the sound card. That is only a problem if you are using the computer to play music and use it for mp3s and what not. Being that is like 1/2 of the reason I got a new PC, I have to take it in to see what the issue is.

He mentioned that they would swap it out, and to be honest, I hope that it isn’t anything that major. I had to wait for like 2 hours for them to put the spyware and virus software on there, and to add the memory I purchased; I don’t want to have to wait for them to do that again.

Let’s hope it is MINOR, and that the sound card is just loose or something. Or maybe, they will just give me a new sound card. Either way, I am on the one hand glad that this happened NOW, as opposed to a few weeks down the line, but when you buy something so shiny and new, you don’t want it to break ever, let alone three days into using it.

Oh well, wish me luck. On another Best Buy related note (because that is where I got my copy), the new fantastic Hilary Duff CD is out today. If “Outside of You” doesn’t make you go into a gay fit, then I need to see your gay card so I can tear off a corner. It is seriously wonderful! I heart you Hilary!

This would be a perfect “I told you so” moment for a mac user. Anyone?

Will mac users be able to figure out how the comments section works on here without big icons?

“Outside of You” is great, but “Stranger” is mucho better. Makes you want to get up and dance. And that my friend, is when you need your gay card the most.

Putting in the spyware and stuff – doesn’t that sound like one of the skits for those Mac commericals? Maybe visualizing it as a commercial isn’t a good idea – the PC guy in the backless hospital gown is too much. Don’t need that visual.

Why would your desktop computer ever go into a “sleep mode”?

Step 1) Turn off energy saving stuff, leave that PC on, or turn it off completely, no inbetween. I personally leave mine on, has been for over 60 days, doesnt skip a beat.

Step 2) Loose sound card? You running a surround sound system? If not then the onboard sound will do you perfectly fine. And it never get’s loose.

Step 3) Dude, You needed them to install anti-spyware software? That Geek Squad no nothing needs to get frogmarched onto a deserted airstrip and shot in the head for gross incompetence… Firewall your PC, firewall the router, run windows defender, end of story. Same goes for anti-virus, if you’re smart, you don’t need it, and it slows down the startup process.

    Greg, with regards to:

Loose sound card? You running a surround sound system? If not then the onboard sound will do you perfectly fine. And it never get’s loose.

Without the sound card, there is no sound device installed, and the sound doesn’t work at all.

And Lori, don’t be a high and Mac-ty, aiight! ;)

I would seriously want to stab someone.

    Good luck, Duane!

Juuuuuuust a suggestion… You still have time to return that piece of crap and get a mac mini.

Seriously, I have talked to some members of the Geek Squad and I feel bad that they are giving people advice on PCs when they can’t even answer my simple questions (I have built many a-PC in my time).

This just in… Back from Best Buy; it was a driver/Vista issue. Apparently, this is common when coming back from hibernation, Vista gets drivers confused and loses things. He told me that if I had the problem again, just unhook my printer (which is using a XP driver, which is the problem) and everything should be fine on restart.

It was well worth taking it up there for the piece of mind. Not to mention, the Geek Squad guy was HOT, and totally talked to me the whole time I was waiting. Yum!

And Jeff, I really like the PC, it is perfect except for this driver issue. No Mac Mini this time!

    Duane,
I’ve been having flashbacks reading your last couple of posts since I used to work at Best Buy on the Geek Squad.

    Re: Greg’s point #3,
Whether you’re dealing with competent tech-minded (albeit generally non-A /MCSE-accredited) people or with know-nothing hucksters depends entirely on the management of a particular store. The first department manager I had was tech-minded, and he hired good people who actually got shit done. The second manager I dealt with was sales-minded and hired stupid, personable people. Funny thing is the sales numbers were about the same under both of them, but the number of complaints about shoddy work went up under the second manager. Go figure.
