It is really easy to see this person as a dispicable hypocrite, and I for one grinned with pleasure at this public exposure of yet another gutless evangelical scumbag......but less apparent is that he is the spawn of a system that DEMANDS his hypocrisy in the first place.

Indulge me for a moment to imagine a world where it wasn't even newsworthy that a preacher slept with men at all (wife and kids aside for a second)- more to the point, why is it even newsworthy?
In Europe, people would roll their eyes, and yawn.
It is only speculation on my part but I feel that there is some connection between the fact that it was the religious people's of England who were seeking to find even more religous oppression than England had to offer at the time. These people are the forefathers of America, and it's time they got a big boot in the ass. This is in no way to imply European superiority, but just to acknowledge the very real effect of isolation on a culture that has no other dealings within its own borders.

For one thing, there are lots of people living in America now who aren't Christian and don't give a rat's ass about what the Bible has to say or not say about anything.

What if it was worth no one's time or energy that this guy was gay at all, aren't there more pressing matters at hand?
What if he were afforded the same 'respectability' as everyone else as a minister and that he was gay was irrelevant?
Sound's like a no brainer- but is it really?

If the "pseudo-religious" political oppression that was in place was exposed and lifted then there would have been no need for any hypocrisy on his behalf in the first place. He wouldn't have felt compelled to hide from his society unless he felt despised by it in the first place, and he couldn't have capitalized on the straight white male prerogative, unless there actually was one.

Zealots of all descriptions, have one thing in common-a secret love of the thing they protest to be so much against ("my lady me thinks thou doest protest too much".....(shakespeare).

That left Haggard and leaves other scared Gay people the choice of either denying what they are (a great prescription for drug or any other kind of addiction, incidentally) and their nature, by turning into some kind of zealot denouncing their own beings by externalizing their own internal oppression onto others..(in the name of God of course)-or walking a lonely road and fighting openly and honestly against injustice and hypocrisy.

If you can't beat em join em takes a lot less courage, but until we refuse to vote into office ANYONE who make the kinds of impossible choices mandatory (oppress or be oppressed) for ALL of its citizens this will keep on happening.
Until the protection of a person's right to their own nature is cited as the most important thing on a ballot we will continue to see that very lack of freedom articulated and mirrored onto others in the form of hypocrisy and lateral oppression.

So now the straights don't want him, and the gays certainly don't.
This guy has nobody, not even himself, now, he is utterly alone. I can't help feel compassion for someone like that, even if I am gay and have had to deal with ideological idiots and assholes like him all my life.

He is partly to blame, but I would say again partly. Until our society roots out and dismantles homophobia that he internalized, he will be only partly to blame.

(I still think the guy's a schmuck though)

Another reason I love you!

That guy was in Jesus Camp, and he was a real asshole! He completely shat on this 12-year-old's self-esteem.
