national coming out day (one month from today) and 9/11

So today is September 11th. Definitely filled with thoughts and memories. Sad for those that lost people on this very day just 5 years ago. Also wondering to myself why we don’t have this day off of work; after all, it is the least we can do to honor the memory of those lost, it was, after all, the biggest tragedy in American history (arguably), right? I’m just saying.

Also, today is one month from (thanks John!) national coming out day. I’m gay. So, I’m out now. But you already knew that. It is good to be out in life, though, and not have to carry around those feelings of being alone, scared, and be filled with self-hatred for who you are. I honestly think about that on this day, because I know that there are several other people struggling with coming to terms with their own sexuality, and are going through what can only be described as the hardest thing I ever went through. I only wish that just the act of coming out that first time was enough; as many other gay people know, we have to come out every time we are anywhere, just to be who we are, and we are always subject to judgement and discrimination based on that. But let’s not think about that today… Out and proud baby! (yeah, so I thought it was today when I wrote this. Oh well, I am human.)

I had a lot of fun this weekend, and it seems that I have been filling up my weekends with dinners and drinking with friends. I love that, and I hope to keep the trend going. I also said goodbye to a good friend this weekend; he is moving back to live with his parents and sort some things out in his life. I wish him all the best, and know that he has done the hardest part already; he is taking care of himself, and not ignoring his problems. I am so proud of him. (I know he is reading this… so, know that I am proud of YOU.) Love ya buddy. Hope you can come back soon.

As for everything else, it is just a Monday, folks! Can’t wait till it’s over!

National Coming Out Day is actually October 11. I can’t wait to see Kathy Griffin AND Scissor Sisters! October is gonna rock.

I’m all for remembering 9/11 but I think remembering it is enough. Having the day off work makes you question when you draw the line? What happened next week when a plane crashes in a cornfield in Illinois and 143 people die. Do we get that day off too? Days off are nice but we also have to remember that to be a functioning society work is required.

I’m with Shan! 9/11 was a horrific day but not to sound cliche about it, if we were to make 9/11 a Federal Holiday, we’ve effectively let the terrorists win. I know, I know… I hate hearing that line, too. But think about it, if we were to shut down our economy for a day, we’ve effectively lost or given up money and productivity that would have been there otherwise. We cannot let these terrorists shake up our lives any more. Remember the day. Remember how regardless of what we do, there will be people out there that want to kill us or destroy our way of life. We can’t let that happen, can we?

I understand the logic of “letting the terrorists win” by “shutting down”, and also realize that people have to go to work, but I also realize that we even have a holiday for a man that raped and pillaged his way through the new world. I am just saying that it is the least we could do for the thousands of people that lost their lives. It is just 24 hours I am talking about. Out of all of the federal holidays we have, I would think this one would be right up there at the top as being one of the most important and respectful.

One important way to prevent something like this from ever happening again is to remember it forever. This would be the perfect way to do that, and it would show our respect to those that died.

And Shannon, about that crash that occurred a week later, that was unrelated to 9/11. Yes, it was tragic as well, but 9/11 is the biggest attack ever on the US by terrorists. That means something a little more to me, and if that is wrong, so sue me.

…it is the least we could do for the thousands of people that lost their lives.

Or, we could vindicate them by wiping the fuck-hats responsible for this off the face of the Earth forever, but whatevs… your call.

Um, I say we do both… but we have been fucking around poking and prodding, killing and raping our way through the middle east instead of actually going after those responsible for the attack. I am all for “bringing the terrorists to justice”, but we actually have to be actively seeking them out to do that. Once we can get on that, then I will be 100% supportive of the actual war on terror. Up until now, we haven’t been doing that at all.

We totally have, but you can’t blame a soldier for wanting to get a little Iraqi booty while they’re over there, can you? I mean, these people are pretty much cattle to us. Who cares if we fuck a goat or two?

I would hate to think what would happen if people were given the day off. It would slowly become a day of sales and special offers, not unlike presidents day and mlk day. It would be sick.
