It's insane that it's even an issue. How can the government possibly justify infringing on the basic civil rights of a group based purely on the moral objection of another group? It should not matter in the LEAST if the group that objects is in the majority. This is a democracy, but that does not mean that the majority rules in all matters.

I do feel that many of the people who object to gay marriage are stupid enough to believe that they'll have to see gay marriage in their stupid churches. Because the world is full of them. Stupid people, I mean.

Our country is built on prejudice & discrimination: hell, look at our origin. We stole it from the Native Americans. I think we're in for a long haul on this one. However, the U.S. has improved ever-so-slightly. I remember coming to Atl in the mid-eighties, & I never saw gay couples show affection outside bars.

I think it'll happen eventually, but all minority groups have to struggle & fight for long periods of time before we can break through the legal system. It's pathetic.

Check this out: http://smarmybastard.spaces.msn.com/Blog/cns!C4A3822D65740527!1939.entry

People don't think of the gay marriage issue this way. They usually say, we can do the same things, draw up legal contracts, powers of attorney etc. But heterosexuals have that simply by signing the marriage certificate. And even thought they have said legal documents drawn, homosexual partners still have to jump through hoops to see their loved one in a hospital. It has nothing whatsoever to do with ruining "the institution of marriage". If anything, it would make it stronger. It just discrimination and intolerance pure and simple, glossed over with seemingly harmless and logical arguements to justify said intolerance.

What's particularly galling in the NY decision is the condescending language they wrote about children, intercourse, and the "advance of science".

I excerpted some of it in my post today (of course I stole it from another more well-informed blogger)

Speaking as someone who has to continually write about this issue for a GLBT magazine, I have to say it's exhausting. I'm getting burned out over the same-sex marriage debate. It's one of those things that is so simple (we should have the same rights as heterosexual couples who marry), yet so frustrating.

Most people, when you sit them down and explain what you want -- inheritance rights, social security benefits, hospital visitation rights, etc. -- understand completely. I've even talked to people who are against same-sex marriage, say, "Well, let's call it something else then. I'll give you those rights but just call it something different."

One day, we will figure out a way to convey this to the entire American public. One day we will be equal in the eyes of the law.
