Please don't pull out your gorgeous hair.

Wordpress is a good system. I would offer my home-brewed system for your use, but it has a couple of bugs on the admin side that I've been too lazy to fix (since I'm the only one who uses it - well, me and one other guy - and I don't care).

I don't know what kind of server setup you have, but if it has Perl I assume it has PHP.

If you are thinking of switching to another system, WP is definitely the way to go as already mentioned. Instructions for migrating from MT can be found <a href="http://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_from_Movable_Type_to_WordPress" rel="nofollow">here</a> at the WP Codex.

Let me know if I can help any.

Well if you haven't decided to switch to WordPress yet and still want to give ole MT another shot you can try this. I talked about at the last APWBWGTTD meetup but doubt you would remember after all those Irish Car Bombs.

Open up you mt.cgi file (remember always create a backup before editing so you can put it back to the old way if it doesn't work out) and find the following code line: # PingTimeout 20 This is hold many seconds MT will timeout at on pings and rebuilds. The default is set to 20 secs so you might want to set it to something like 60 secs.

The second thing you can do is change how many entries you rebuild at a time by editing this code: # EntriesPerRebuild 40 Default is 40 and I would cut down to something like 20 entries at a time.

Now I still have install files for the older version MT 3.17 if you want to downgrade. If all that doesn't work then you just might want to switch to WordPress.

I posted a similiar request on my blog a few weeks ago and the response was unanimous... move to WordPress. If you're current host supports PHP & MySQL, you're set. If it doesn't, move to Dreamhost. They're real cheap and provide one-click WordPress installs. Email me if you're interested, they have a referral deal where I can give you free activation... Good luck!

Duane, I recently switched to Textpattern, but not because I was unhappy with MT. I never had problems with MT 3.x rebuilding, but I used to have problems with MT 2.x. That is, when I would leave my firewall on, it couldn't rebuild. So I would have to disable my firewall each time I posted. It was a strange bug, because the rebuilding should all be done server side and should have nothing to do with my computer, but it occured on several MT installations.

I had the same problem with MT - once I got to the point where I had a lot of stuff in the system (I'd say about 500 entries, and not too many comments) it would completely hang on me. I switched to WP a while ago and have never been happier - no spam, no rebuilding, assloads of plug-ins, and an extremely helpful bunch of support-type people. I managed to combine about 6 years of Livejournal, MT, Pmachine, and Greymatter entries into the current install of WP on my site :)

Definitely go with PHP. I realize it's a large undertaking, but it kicks ass for *actually working when you need it to*.
