I thought that it would be fun, since I wrote such a long review of Jarhead, to look at other movies that I really want to see this movie season. Also, it would be nice to see what other people think about these upcoming shows. Here it goes:
Obviously, these are the ones that I MUST see:
Brokeback Mountain — I will RUN to the theatre to see this. Unfortunately, I have a insatiable curiosity, and, I happen to know how it ends. I don’t care. I am going with tissue in hand. Here is hoping that I don’t do that wheezing cry. Just a simple quiet cry would be okay. Also, here is hoping that I can wipe up before the lights come on; or at least run to the car. Can’t wait. Antici…pation: 10/10
Rent — I don’t care what anyone else out there says about this movie. At least one person has been getting flack for his excitement, but I am right there with him. Rent is a great musical, and I truly believe, after seeing several trailers and a music video for “œ(Let’s Go) Out Tonight”, that it is going to be phenomenal. I cannot wait for this amazing show to come to the silver screen. I will be right there with the rest of the Rent-heads, singing every song. Which reminds me, I need to be practicing, if I am going to learn La Vie Boheme as good as Josh! Antici…pation: 10/10
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire — Come on, do I really need to explain? It is Harry freaking Potter. I love Harry Potter. So does everyone that has bothered to read the books. We all know that this one is going to be super packed, and hopefully well made; considering the book is incredibly long. I don’t mind sitting in the theater for 3 hours, as long as it delivers like the last one did. Harry Potter is always a must. Anticipation: 10/10
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – Who isn’t looking forward to this one? I actually took classes in elementary school where we did nothing but read these books and look for the literary meanings, and discover the depth of each of these books. I have been looking forward to this, ever since I saw the original PBS one they did that was less than fantastic. Here’s hoping they don’t muck it up. Seriously. Antici…pation: 9/10
Aeon Flux – I remember watching this awesome cartoon when I was younger; late at night when it played randomly on Liquid Television on MTV. When I first heard they were making a movie, I thought, awesome; but a little part of me worries, considering it is making a cartoon into live action. Here’s hoping that Charlize Theron can pull it off. Based on the previews I believe she just may be able to. Antici…pation: 8/10
Transamerica — Felicity Huffman as a transsexual male to female?? YES! This sounds like one of those movies where they will be like, “œand the Oscar goes to…” First the Emmy, and now this. Felicity is giving us many reasons to love her. I know that this is a limited release, which may impact my ability to see it, but know that it is one I am really looking forward to. Antici…pation: 9/10
And the ones that I want to see, but will probably wait for rental:
Elizabethtown – Really wanted to see this. So bad that I tried to get up the energy to go to the theater… but alas, I never made it. For whatever reason, I didn’t make it, so I am going to just wait for the rental. According to the reviews, that may not be such a bad choice. Antici…pation: 7/10
Memoirs of a Geisha — This looks great, but it also looks like one I can rent. I just get that vibe from it… Antici…pation: 7/10
The Producers — Now, this may move up to the must see list, but as of right now, it hasn’t. Reason? I have never heard any of the music of the Producers, and I have heard the story is a little hokey. I can handle that, yes, but I tend to be a skeptic when it comes to musicals. Yes, I am always surprised, and almost always come around; but just let me be a skeptic, dammit. Or try to convince me. Whatever you want to do. I am open. Antici…pation: 8/10
Pride and Prejudice — You really can’t go wrong with Jane Austen, seriously. She is awesome. But for some reason, this smells like a rental to me. Antici…pation: 4/10
Shopgirl – As much as I do want to see this because I have a deep seeded LOVE for Claire Danes, and I have heard that she is absolutely flawless in the movie, I just think that it seems like something I would enjoy watching sitting on my old trusty sofa. Claire, I love ya, but I can wait to rent ya. Antici…pation: 6/10
Walk the Line – While I love Reese Witherspoon, we all know I can pass up one of her movies, and wait for the rental (see Legally Blonde and, more recently, Just like Heaven). This movie does have one major flaw for me; it stars Joaquin Phoenix, and for one reason or another, I really can’t stand him. Seriously, he is like Nicolas Cage or Val Kilmer… they just rub me the wrong way. I would prefer they not rub me at all. Antici…pation: 5/10
And, the bottom of the barrel (otherwise known as the movies I could care less about seeing):
Chicken Little — I don’t like stories about little animals (i.e., Stuart Little)
Saw II — maybe next Halloween?
Legend of Zorro — More like the legend of NO NO NO NO NO.
The Weather Man — Nicolas Cage is always a deal-breaker.
Prime — May rent it, in fact, let’s add it to the Netflix queue. But I am not excited.
Zathura - (don’t you mean Jumanji in space?)
Get Rich or Die Trying - um… no.
Derailed — you had me at… ah, never mind, you never had me.
The Ice Harvest — Maybe… if it were on Showtime.
In the Mix — get out of here… Usher, in a movie where he pretty much gets to play himself? Uh, no.
Fun with Dick and Jane — Don’t like Jim Carey. And nothing you say will change it.
Cheaper by the Dozen 2 — I don’t think I even needed to put that here. Seriously. Come on.
Yours, Mine, & Ours — But not mine, cos I won’t be there.
Just Friends — Take away Ryan Reynolds’ hot body, and what are you left with? The answer is nothing.
Some fun Music (not related to the movies, really):
Ben Folds - the Luckiest
Nickel Creek - When you Come Back Down
Lindsay Lohan - Confessions of a Broken Heart (I love this song!)
where did you see the “out tonight” video?
That list is almost identical to mine, I am so excited for Rent, I don’t know why. I saw it on Broadway which I know will blow the movie out of the water, but I still can’t wait.
I really want to go she Shopgirl, I adore Claire Danes!
I am surprised that you don’t want to see Get Rich or Die Tryin. Gosh I fr one think Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is a great actor who is really stretching himself and flexing his acting muscle to take on such an unfamiliar challenging role. Oh, never mind my sarcasm doesn’t read as well as I hoped, and I don’t want anyone to think I might seriously see this film.
I’m dying, DYING to see Walk The Line, TransAmerica, Harry Potter and Brokeback Mountain. It’s like I’m some gay cowboy country western singer who does magic and has gender identity issues. And as far as Ted getting crap for Rent he’s a big boy (a big boy who likes musicals, not that there’s anything wrong with that).
: )
Jeremy, do you have Logo? There is a show on there called NewNowNext, and it was one of the music videos they played last week. If it is any indication of how good the movie is going to be, it is going to great.
I really only want to see Derailed for 2 reasons: I loved the book (devoured it in record time) and Clive Owen makes my bits tingle.
Charlize Theron as Aeon Flux is just wrong. Wrong. Angelina Jolie would have been so much better.
Yes! I’m totally there with you on your top choices. Except for Aeon Flux. I don’t really know what’s going on with that.
And I’m particularly excited to see Shopgirl. I just think it’s going to be one of those movies that leaves me with a wonderfully achy heart. Kind of like Lost in Translation.
And I’ve got to see Derailed. I am love with Clive Owen and, thanks to US Weekly, am now obsessed with Jennifer Aniston.
The other movie I’m feeling really stoked about is The Family Stone - think about it. SJP, Diane Keaton, Luke Wilson, Claire Daines, Rachel McAdams…ahhh!! I’m getting tingly thinking about it!
I will join your chorus of people insanely excited for Rent. Even though I saw it on stage probably five times, I always bawl my eyes out — that music is so perfect!
I saw Saw on video a while ago and it was truly one of the best horror movies ever made. So I’m sure Saw II will disappoint, but I kinda want to see it anyway.
I have never paid to see a Harry Potter movie (though I’ve been known to stop when I surf by on ABC Family or something), even though I’ve read all the books up to now (and am currently in the middle of HBP). Is it wrong for me to think that Harry, sans glasses, is growing up to be quite the dish? I think it is, so I won’t say it.
And while I agree with you that “Just Friends” really has nothing going for it but Ryan Reynolds’s hot body, but then… well, it IS Ryan Reynolds’s hot body.
Jen, I agree 100000000000000000%. I believe this would have been a natural transition from Lara Croft… come on people!
Dennis!, that movie is about him being fat… I don’t see how he is going even be able to bring said hot body to the table… so sad.
I intend on making one of my viewings of Rent (yes, there will be many) a sing-a-long.
I’m super psyched about Harry Potter too, but what about King Kong? No love for Peter Jackson?
I’m so there with your top picks! Okay, maybe not Aeon Flux either, but the rest (i.e. the 8/10 ones and up) are totally on my list as well! I’m one of the musical freaks out there and I have to admit, while I love musical theatre, there is always a certain amount of fear with how the materials will be treated on film. Some directors just don’t seem to understand that there is the stage, there is the stage-film, and then there is the film. And each one is very different. As for Rent, I’m excited, but I’m still upset that the ending is different from the opera - it was a romantic TRAGEDY and it was so beautiful as such… I think we need to learn to appreciate the tragedy once again…
Rent is going to be awesome. I am so excited about it, I could just cum in my pants right here. (Okay… maybe not that excited.) I’ve seen the musical 3 times (in 3 different cities) so you can see how big of a nerd I am. Whatever… it’s good stuff, and I’ll probably see the movie multiple times. (I promise not to sing along. That’s just obnoxious.)
I looooove Joaquin Pheonix although I heard a pretty disturbing story about him on the radio today. He’s so dark and complicated and strange…just my kind of guy
yeah i’m a bit worried i won’t find anyone willing to see rent with me. i almost feel like it’s the mid/late nineties again.
Great Post! Now I Have a good “movies-to-do” list! I just saw Ryan in Amityville Horror, my god, he’s perfect.
SawII was actually pretty good, I’d check it out.
I can’t wait for Brokeback Mtn. and Rent. Ted has me hooked since he gave me his soundtrack and the little book that comes with it.
Chicken little I gotta see!
I liked Saw I, but Saw II may just be too gory for me. As I age, gore bothers me more and more!
I am dying to see Brokeback Mountain. I’ll be running alongside you!
Chicken Little? Eh, no way!
I don’t like the guy playing Johnny Cash in Walk The Line. Not believing him as Johnny.
I loved the Narnia books as a kid! That and Harry Potter will be movies I will definitely see.
I love winter releases! I never feel guilty about going to a movie when it’s freezing outside.
I’m on the fence about Aeon Flux (Not really my kind of movie) and Pride and Prejudice. I just feel like I’ve had enough of Keira Knightley.
I’m with you on almost all your highly anticipated ones, but I am also frothy for ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’. It looks so beautifully shot and I loved the book so much. If the viewing can be as transformational as the reading was, it’ll be awesome. Plus, Ken Watanabe–yum.
I saw the touring production of ‘The Producers’ and ROARED through it. The songs are fun, too. I usually share the opinion of your buddy, The Other Andrew, but he yawned through the production he caught in Sydney. Even reasonable queers differ on matters of taste, I suppose.
Just Friends is about Ryan Reynolds as a fat high schooler, who loses a lot of weight (i.e., ends up his hot bod self and goes back in search of the hot chick he loved but who thought he was a great friend because he was fat.
Dennis! WOO HOOO!!! Thanks for clarifying it for me! Based on the movie poster, and what little snippet I got from the trailer I saw, I got the wrong impression, d’oh! Maybe this one is worth seeing after all!!!!! Thanks for clearing that up for me ;o)
