- We are celebrating a man who “discovered” a continent, that not only was “discovered” thousands of years prior by other peoples, but was inhabited for possibly millions of years by the indigenous people that were already living there. So, he really didn’t discover anything, did he?
- We are celebrating a man that ushered in a new world, bringing Spanish rule to a place that was governed by its own rules; and if those people resisted, they were instantly subjected to genocide and slavery. So, he really didn’t usher in a new world, so much as conquer and pillage one that he found already occupied.
- We are celebrating a man that is single-handily credited with initiating a transatlantic trade system between the Caribbean and Spain; but it should be noted that this trade system was the first of its kind to bring Native Americans to Spain, as slaves. It is believed that it is more likely that he actually started the transatlantic slave trade. So, he didn’t really do anything good there, did he, in fact, that is pretty bad in my opinion.
- So what are we really celebrating? A man that raped, pillaged, tortured, killed, and took what he wanted. He came to America, an inhabited place, took the people as slaves, and gained his fortune on the backs of those slaves. AND, managed to bring plagues that wiped out much of the people that were there, as if the genocide wasn’t bad enough. WAY TO GO COLUMBUS!!!! Now, we celebrate your accomplishments every year!
At least I get a day off of work; so I can celebrate the life’s work of a man that is pretty much nothing more than a douchebag. Happy Columbus day everyone!
**Since I don’t speak Spanish, and I didn’t want to “censor” someone just because they didn’t post in English, I had this translated (if the translation is incorrect, and you can help me correct it, please comment, or email me, thanks!):
The population of all the Latin-American countries is composed practicamente by the descendants of those American natives. The only pies of “the Americas” where a systematic genocide has committed itself has been in the United States of America. Alone you remain one as many as thousands and on top confined in reserves. Shame for the Anglo-saxon killers.
Columbus day is a day where we all get to be like Christopher Columbus and not do anything significant (i.e- go to work or school)
And it’s also a day for awesome sales!
Ay Columbus!
I can translate that a little more smoothly…
I’ll be giving my reverance for Mr. Columbus today by working as per usual. However, I will think about him during my trips to the bathroom. It’s amazing this is still a “holiday”.
Thanks Garrett!! Interestingly enough, the comment came from someone in Spain; are they referring to the Spanish as the Anglo-saxon killers? Cause that is what I am referring to here. So yeah!
**English “translation” (Garrett, feel free to step in any time…):
I am according to what has said I. The unico pies of the please American where does not remain ningun resquicio of American natives he is United States. The countries that colonized the Spaniards are inhabited at present by the descendants of the natives that vivian in that epoca alli. For example mejico, peru, Colombia… they are full of racially mixed. The Anglo-saxon imperialists on the other hand they murdered to almost all the natives and themselves they were not crossed with them.
Since I don’t work for the government or at a bank, I’m not celebrating this “holiday” at all!
Another translation…
Sorry this one took longer… I typed it yesterday but forgot to hit “Post”… D’oh!
Thanks for the translations Garrett; it allows me to say something back. Do you two guys not think that the Spaniards came over here and did some bad shit?? Do you not remember that they took out entire empires (Inca, Aztec, etc.) and wiped out populations to the near brink of extinction (in many cases, it was as much as 99% of the population) with plagues and war; only to take the rest as slaves, and yes, as you put it, act as ancestors the the current people?? Yes, a similar situation happened with the Native Americans, and that too was bullshit, but it was all started when that ahole Columbus sailed his ships over here in the first place. And for the record, I certainly consider Columbo one of the colonizing killers, he doesn’t escape that fact because he was thought to be from Spain and decided to rape women and breed.
Hey, no problem, I never get to use my Spanish anymore. As long as people know that I’m not the one making the comment; I just translate.
