soaring gas prices, birthday gifts, and continuing the workout routine

In the wake of SOARING gas prices (I heard that there were some places that were gouging prices to as high as $8 a gallon yesterday), due to the shortened supply from Katrina, I have decided to consistently carpool with my buddy Deb. This way, we can both share the increased costs of this catastrophe.

Related, but only slightly, I got a new car for my birthday. NICE! you say? Totally nice. It is a 2005 Acura TSX, and it is SUUUWEEET! It has just about every feature ever made for cars, and I love it.

But I think that goes without saying, right? Who wouldn’t love a brand new car with everything in it? Not me! Here’s a pic of the beautiful creature that is Duane’s new Acura TSX:

I do solemnly swear to keep this car clean (to the best of my ability), and pamper it as long as I can. I want this baby to last!!! It even comes with XM radio, which I think that I will end up keeping past the first three months (which are free), because it is nice to have all those channels, and especially to have an Air America station that comes in more clearly than the AM version. So that’s that.

As for the workout, last night I was awesome. I rocked out 30 minutes on the elliptical. I thought that my feet were going to shrivel up and die, and I actually had a conversation with Judy Garland near the end, but I did make it the full 30 minutes. It looks like this workout thing isn’t going to be so bad, and it also looks like I can actually maintain it… for 3 days at least. I know I can though, cause I am pratically a retired professional when it comes to staying in shape… but now, this bitch has got to go back to work.

Tonight we join the Y, and the workout will commence. I had planned on doing spin class tonight at the Y, but my biceps are hurting very badly from my workout on Tuesday still, so I will probably do a repeat of yesterday, with sit ups added. And that is all for the work out update. More to come, stay tuned!

I have a mantra I say when I get on my elliptical machine - I say “Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Schuster” So that I remember my goal is to get my body into their category of hotness…But if Judy Garland works for you - then work it!

Thanks for the advice, Jen! I have a similar thing with Edward Norton and Jake Gyllenhaal… but in the case of yesterday, I was referring to communing with the dead, i.e. Judy. That was one hell of a workout! But I am still dedicated!!! HOOOAAAA!

    So. Fucking. Jealous.

The TSX is on my short list, but I don’t know if I want to spend the money on it.

Am I the only heartless soul here that thinks indeed this is a tragedy, but didn’t we tell the tens of thousands of people to leave the city before the hurricane? I mean a disaster response can help a few thousand or ten before the system is overwhelmed. even the tsunami victims had it hard for months and I hope the N.O. refugees know that and that the aid wasn’t there within hours either. I just wish there were more personal responsibility for actions. people are looting things to survive… I get that. but a PIANO? BIG SCREEN TVs? shoot ‘em I say. the U.S. and it’s citizens collectively feel horrible and are doing what we can, but I wonder how many residents who live UNDER sea level said screw your warnings and be damned the hurricane. well, this is what you get.
btw, nice new car and keep up the gym time. remember, it is FUN.

Andy, I agree that it is a tragedy, but it saddens me that the response time was so great, when so many are in need. There should have been a more immediate response, and that is the issue here. It is understandable when you do all that you can, but in Katrina’s case, we didn’t.

I really want to be careful in placing blame on people that “didn’t heed the warnings” and stayed behind when they were ordered to evacuate; I know that many of those people really had no other choice. My heart goes out to them now, as the suffer with the consequences of a decision that was made for them by sickness, poverty, lack of transportation, etc.

This whole event has shook the nation, and I hope that it is a wake up call to the current and future administrations: we need to be better prepared, and in this case, we could have been.
